The Monson article is a must-read for those of us patiently waiting for the rest of the US to love soccer like we do.
Two good quotes: He called Kasey Keller's saves "ridiculously spectacular." (Go Kasey!) "Soccer is a legitimate spectator sport, regardless of how many ugly American sports fans continue to deny and exclude its significance. We're learning as we go here, especially about the meandering road to the World Cup. But the lessons are worth learning. The road worth traveling." Okay, one more quote. This is a little unlikely me, but it made me laugh: "And . . . damn. It was cool."

Deseret News had excellent coverage today. The first three pages of the sports section were almost completed devoted to RSL and the USMNT. The desnews website had the WCQ as one of the main stories on the main page. There are some links below. You won't believe this one (MUST READ FOR ALL YOU WHO REMEMBER THE BRAD ROCK ARTICLE EARLIER):
Brad Rock... repenting?? Time to send some positive feedback. I think we should use some of the Loyalists dues to buy him a ticket in E32 on us. I just saw the sports page thingee on Fox 13.. great coverage, first story of the show. Glenn was in the background when they were interviewing DJ. DJ seemed very upset and apologetic. He was very upset about disappointing the fans here in SLC. One of the Fox 13 people called Runge, "Real Runge." Some RSL/Dallas stories A WCQ story Another WCQ story Lee Benson article Article about Kasey Keller Love for Landon There are even articles about MLS in general, not just RSL. DesNews has really impressed me lately. If I subscribed to a paper, this may be one of my top five choices.

Maybe I've been conditioned to the kind of negativity soccer usually gets from journalists. Maybe I thought we could get new fans once they'd experienced a true soccer event, but never thought the jurassic press would see the light.
So I'm hoping that explains how amazed I am to read these articles. Particularly the one by Brad Rock, who has been, shall we say, cautious about soccer. The piece he wrote about the RSL home opener basically said it was interesting but only people who'd grown up with the game could really like it. And he made it clear that he hadn't grown up with the game. I wonder if we just passed a major milestone. Dave Checketts is a genius.

BTW Deseret News emailed me Saturday night and asked me how their coverage compared to SL Trib.
Any thoughts? | |||||

I'd have to see the print version of the trib. The print versin of the DesNews, imho, was fantastic. I'd reply and say you've heard some great things.

I have actually preferred the DNews sports reporting to the Trib for the most part. Where the Trib kicks butt is with their columns. Almost everyone of the Trib columnists is better than every DNews columnist.

Both papers have been great to us.
The Ogden Standard Examiner & Provo Daily Herald have also improved their coverage. btw, did anyone see Mother Jules on the front page of Sunday's Daily Herald? I can't find it online but it was cool. 😎
