RSL Claims Day of the Dead Match
Posted by Stucki on 10-28-2005 at 11:54 PM
Real Salt Lake met Chivas USA in an expansion "grudge match" on Friday to settle the season series that finished with each team winning at home. The two teams played hard, with both teams playing all of their healthy regulars, but the tone of the game was much different than the last time the two teams met at Rice Eccles in the August heat. Tonight's match reflected the weather, which was chilly and overcast. The cold conditions and wet turf seemed to impact the flow of the game as both teams managed only seven shots each.
The first half ended without a goal with Chivas looking like the more dangerous side with Matt Taylor just wide in the 9th minute being the most dangerous chance. Although Francisco Palencia created chances that forced the RSL defense into great plays to keep Chivas off the board.

Real Salt Lake Announces Stadium Site
Posted by Stucki on 10-13-2005 at 07:54 AM
Real Salt Lake today announced the location of their new soccer specific stadium in the Salt Lake suburb of Sandy. RSL CEO Dean Howes started the proceedings by recapping some of the teams off field accomplishments from the past year. Starting from the ground up, the team has grown from zero employees to thirty, from zero sponsors to 55, and from zero ticket holders to over 5, 000.
RSL owner and founder Dave Checketts formally announced the stadium site on 22 acres near the intersection of 9400 S. and State St. The land is currently empty and will be sufficient space for a 25,000-seat stadium with roofed seating, surrounded by practice fields and a training facility. The complex will also include fountains and open space with additional development to come around the stadium. Checketts said that the team would not be involved in the commercial development, but would bid that... |

RSL Loses Rocky Mountain Cup on Late Goal
Posted by Stucki on 10-13-2005 at 07:52 AM
In a game that was typical of their entire season, Real Salt Lake lost their season finale and the Rocky Mountain Cup in front of 13, 813 fans in Rice Eccles Stadium Wednesday evening. RSL controlled the flow of the entire match, out shooting the Rapids 16 to 7 and had more shots on goal 7 to 1. RSL had squandered several opportunities in the first half, but second half misses with Colorado keeper Joe Cannon off his line by RSL’s Seth Trembley and Melvin Tarley were especially costly.
Colorado’s only shot on goal came in the 87th minute as Colorado’s Fabrice Noel beat RSL keeper DJ Countess for his first goal of the season on an assist from Jeff Cunningham.

RSL Earns Rare Road Point
Posted by Stucki on 10-09-2005 at 10:21 AM
Real Salt Lake started the game with better defensive organization and intensity than seen in recent games, but still gave up numerous early chances to the San Jose offensive juggernaut. Fortunately for RSL, keeper Jay Nolly and the improved defensive effort kept San Jose off the board for the first half hour.
The game changed in the 39th minute on a fluke goal by Dwayne De Rosario. In a sequence symbolic of RSL’s season, De Rosario’s attempted cut back to Ronald Cerritos in the box deflected off RSL’s Brian Dunseth and Nolly bouncing back to De Rosario’s left foot creating the goal opportunity.
In the 44th minute, RSL’s late half woes continued when Julian Nash scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Cerritos and De Rosario. The second goal seemed to deflate RSL, as they played without the passion seen early in the game.

Real Salt Lake Suffers Another Home Loss
Posted by Stucki on 10-06-2005 at 07:27 AM
Real Salt Lake extended their losing streak in another dissapointing performance at Rice Eccles Stadium Saturday night. Despite creating numerous chances, RSL was unable to solve backup keeper Troy Perkins until a late penalty kick when the game had already been decided.
The game started promisingly for RSL with five shots in the opening fifteen minutes, with the best being an opportunity by Melvin Tarley to chip the keeper, but Perkins was able to deflect the ball just wide of the goal.
After the early opportunities by RSL, DC United scored first on a Bobby Boswell goal from a Christian Gomez free kick.
Clint Mathis started a two minute sequence of chances in the 32nd minute, but neither his free kick or the resulting corner would enable RSL to beat Troy Perkins.

Another Dose of Perspective
Posted by Stucki on 10-04-2005 at 08:47 PM
There has been a great deal of talk lately about where fans want the new stadium to be built. As many are aware, Dave Checketts would prefer to build the stadium in downtown Salt Lake City. As much as the owner and most fans would like the stadium in SLC, multiple factors are most likely going to prevent RSL from realizing the dream of a downtown stadium. Between the reticence of Earl Holding to sell the most optimal locations and the reluctance of Utah’s legislative leaders to work with Mayor Anderson, downtown is probably not going to happen. None of this should be a shock to anyone. Holding has gotten rich sitting on valuable properties and Rocky seems to delight in adversarial politics. As disappointing as that is, it really isn’t that unusual as stadiums go. Many sports franchises have built stadiums in the suburbs and it usually hasn’t affected how fans view the team.

RSL plays better, but still no result.
Posted by Stucki on 09-04-2005 at 07:32 PM
After watching a frustrating display by Real Salt Lake in a mid-week loss to DC United, RSL supporters were presented with a much better performance against Eastern Conference leaders New England. RSL controlled much of the match and out shot the visitors 13 to 6. RSL also had two shots on goal to New England's one, but that one shot most likely put Khano Smith on the list for goal of the week.
After a corner kick by RSL, Smith pounced on the clearance and raced down the left flank accompanied by RSL's Brian Kammler who was unable to turn Smith away from goal. No additional help came as Smith was able to elude Kammler and beat DJ Countess to the far post for the only score of the game.
