RSL Loses Rocky Mountain Cup on Late Goal In a game that was typical of their entire season, Real Salt Lake lost their season finale and the Rocky Mountain Cup in front of 13, 813 fans in Rice Eccles Stadium Wednesday evening. RSL controlled the flow of the entire match, out shooting the Rapids 16 to 7 and had more shots on goal 7 to 1. RSL had squandered several opportunities in the first half, but second half misses with Colorado keeper Joe Cannon off his line by RSL’s Seth Trembley and Melvin Tarley were especially costly.
Colorado’s only shot on goal came in the 87th minute as Colorado’s Fabrice Noel beat RSL keeper DJ Countess for his first goal of the season on an assist from Jeff Cunningham. RSL’s Brian Dunseth after the game talked about how unlucky bounces had magnified mistakes throughout the season and tonight’s game was no different. Dunseth added that it was disappointing to lose the RMC for the fans, echoing comments from Jason Kreis from the stadium press conference that the players wanted to win the cup partly for the fans because the team felt they owed them for their support and passion throughout the year, especially the supporters groups. At the final whistle, thousands of fans threw streamers onto the pitch to thank the team for the season and to express hope for the future. __________________
