Real Salt Lake Suffers Another Home Loss Real Salt Lake extended their losing streak in another dissapointing performance at Rice Eccles Stadium Saturday night. Despite creating numerous chances, RSL was unable to solve backup keeper Troy Perkins until a late penalty kick when the game had already been decided.
The game started promisingly for RSL with five shots in the opening fifteen minutes, with the best being an opportunity by Melvin Tarley to chip the keeper, but Perkins was able to deflect the ball just wide of the goal. After the early opportunities by RSL, DC United scored first on a Bobby Boswell goal from a Christian Gomez free kick. Clint Mathis started a two minute sequence of chances in the 32nd minute, but neither his free kick or the resulting corner would enable RSL to beat Troy Perkins. The first ten minutes of the second half would prove to be disastrous for RSL as the Freddy Adu show began. RSL was unable to capitalize on a free kick and Freddy took off on a counter attack beating RSL keeper DJ Countess to make the score 2 - 0, then two minutes later started the attack for a back breaking goal by Christian Gomez on a nice through ball from Jamil Walker. RSL had a chances on restarts to get back in the game in the 59th and 66th minutes, but Mathis' free kick and rebound shot were both blocked by the DC wall, and Andy Williams free kick was saved by Troy Perkins. Jamie Watson drew a foul in the box, with Andy Williams converting the spot kick in the 78th minute to give the RSL faithful something to cheer for, but it was too little, too late for RSL which saw their lead over last place Chivas shrink to a single point. Next up for is league leading San Jose followed by the deciding game in the Rocky Mt. Cup. __________________
