RSL to make U.S. Open Cup debut July 13

"Real Salt Lake will make its historic debut in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, July 13, when it travels to face the winner of next week's second-round U.S. Open Cup contest between the Chicago Fire Premier and the Minnesota Thunder Wednesday, June 29."

For those of us new to "season tickets" how do these matches work?

Along with the tickets printed for the scheduled regular season games, there are also 4 labeled game A (used for the Catolica game), Game B, Game C and Game D. The team will announce what games the remaining three tickets will be used for as they are scheduled.

I'd imagine that should RSL host an Open Cup match, it would be GAME B (or C or whatever) for season ticket holders.

The Open Cup is a knockout tournament. Once you lose a match you are out. Matches cannot end in a draw and they use OT and/or penalties as needed to make sure there is a winner.

I believe that the team that wins our first match will then play the KC Wizards (who have a bye in our opening round).

How sad would that be if we lost our first cup game!?

In this case, not that sad. Either team (Thunder or CFP) is a worthy opponent. The flip side of that coin is that if we win it is not a meaningless win.

I didn't say either team wouldn't be a worthy opponent. They are both respected teams - CFP from the PDL and the Thunder from the first division. Just that it would be sad.

Yes, but any MLS team should be able to beat the first division, but you never know last years open cup was full of suprises. If i remember correctly the Galaxy got beat out by a first division team.

Wasn't it just a few years ago that FC Dallas lost to a PDL team? (Possibly from El Paso)

An back in the late 90s an A-League team (Rochester I believe) won the whole tournament.

Those lower division teams have nothing to lose and tend to play their hearts out in these matches.
