Can someone plese explain to me why we were running the 4-5-1 to start the season?

the more I learn about soccer the more I'm so confused by this. I love Kreis and what he does and brings to the table, but to run a 4-5-1, wouldn't you need a taller/faster forward?

I love having him in the midfield, and the return of kamler to the midfield will only streangthen one of our weeker points.

The team is starting to gel, I can't wait until we roll of a streak of wins and we're sitting pretty in 3 place. (fuegote, est. 1996, striving for mediocrity).

Thank heavens we have 2 more against chivas and 3 against colorado, i'm assuming that will be 15 points.

I think it originally started as a theoretical way to have Kreis, Super Cleetus, and Andy Williams all on the pitch at the same time, in the positions that they were known for.

Why we stuck with it as long as we did is a big mystery.

I think you are absolutely right. On both things.

4-5-1 is one of the hardest formations I can think of. We should have got rid of it long before we did, but I'm happy it's now gone.

You are correct in saying that we should have had someone taller up front. Kreis is great, but obviously doesn't fit that role.

I gotta agree with you on that. I've never liked the 4-5-1 formation. If nothing else, it makes it really easy for the defenders to figure out where that long ball is going. Kreis was routinely surrounded by 3 or 4 defenders, whenever he got the ball. What kind of chance is there for a score in that?

I do like what is happening now. I think we're onto something. We're progressing well. And yes, it will be good to show up the Cheetos and the Crapids. We have to put them firmly in their place.

I personally like the 4-4-3, but what do I know?

I may be mistaken, but didn't we win the first match we used the 4-5-1 in? I think that's why we tried to use it for a few games thereafter. I too like the 4-4-3, or, even better, the 4-5-6!!! Talk about offense!!

Actually I think a 3-4-3 would be the most exciting, but I don't think the defense heavy MLS would like it very much.

The reason RSL used a 4-5-1 was because their midfield did suck (or read: does suck) so they had to bottle-neck the middle of the field to give their Offense/Defense a chance. For some odd reason it worked a few times (LA & Chivas) but it is a very Sampson/98 WC/ weak offensive lineup.
