MAC or PC

Hello,

I'm just putting this out there, but our family is going to need a new computer. Should I get a MAC or PC? I'd love to hear the pros and cons of both.

Thanks!

PC because:

1. Cheaper to buy
2. Cheaper to upgrade
3. More software
4. More compatible w/ overall population

I used to be a Mac person and no longer see any Mac advantages that overcome the above. Windows interface is easier to use than previous versions.

Don't even say Mac. It's an evil, evil word.

Macs are really really nice now. Awesome interface, great usability -- OS X Tiger is amazing. The hardware design is extraordinary...I'd say get a Mac.

Well, unless your family wants a computer that will actually DO stuff, that is.

Get a PC for games and a Mac to actually use. I have both, PC at home and Mac at school and I prefer the Mac. I will always have both, the games for PC are more plentiful and less expensive.

Ok, I have to admit that when I do web design and photoshopping I like to use a Mac. But I love my PC too much to ever go to the dark side.

Well, I guess I would have a few questions for you. How computer literate is the family? Do you have previous experience w/ either Mac or PC? What types of tasks do you expect to perform (word processing, photo editting, video editting, educational, e-mail, web surfing, etc.)? Do you do much gaming? About how big is the budget? I have to admit that I use Linux and am a big Mac fan. I think Windows is EVIL albeit a necessary EVIL which unfortunately still makes sense for some users...

I tried the Linux thing, and found it to be too much work to get what I needed. It was fun getting it setup, but for everyday use - not so much. As for the Mac vs. PC debate, I go with PC because it's cheaper and more prevalent. Mac sure looks pretty, though. I guess if you're into style over utility, then a Mac is for you.

I would say that I'm fair to partly literate. I can't go "into the box" to try and do anything crazy. I know little about the nuts and bolts, but hey, I'm here on this forum. I would say that my wife knows quite a bit less than I do. My son knows a little, but only on a MAC, because that's what they have in his school.

PC yes, MAC no. When I was in high school I used an Amiga (remember those?)

We'd like to do photo and video stuff, not really processor intensive things, I think, but just enough to get rid of red eye, sharpen images, put together a few clips from family vacations, etc. E-mail, sure. Web surfing, sure.

I used to, but I don't to computer gaming anymore...just XBOX.

Oh, I'd say between 500 - 1200.

I've heard that once you try Macs, you never go back.

Well, that answered the question.
