…looks like I was wrong.

I wouldn't mind him going to ManU though, if he actually gets to play that is.

Manchester United have reportedly joined Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in ruling out

Not so fast, looks like Owen might have to play with Newcastle.

The Daily Telegraph claims that 'well-informed sources' have told the newspaper that United 'have no plans to sign' the Real Madrid striker.

The club are apparently concerned that making a move for the England international, now reduced to fifth-choice striker at the Bernabeu, could 'upset the wage structure and cause complications in the ongoing efforts to persuade Rio Ferdinand to extend his present contract, which runs out in two years' time.'

The papers adds that, 'Owen's considerable wages, which are believed to be near £5million a year, would be a deterrent to any English club.'

The Telegraph's report is supported by the Daily Mail, which claims that Madrid are keen to sell Owen to the Red Devils, but they are not interested.

The Times also believes that, despite fevered speculation in the Sunday tabloids, the prospect of Owen moving to Old Trafford is limited.

'An offer for Owen is said to be unlikely unless [Louis] Saha can be moved on, which will entail a considerable loss for United, who would be lucky to recoup half of the £12 million they paid Fulham,' it states.

That leaves only Newcastle as committed pursuers of Owen. However, despite his apparent desperation to leave Madrid, it's thought that he would prefer to bide his time, at least until the next transfer window, rather than join a club that finished 14th in the Premiership last season and which failed to qualify for Europe.

I have a English friend who watches Sky Sports religiously.
He tells me that it was reported yesterday that my neighbor Malcolm Glazer told ManU Manager Alex Ferguson that he had the money to get Owen IF ManU wanted him.
As if!

Real Madrid signed Brazilian strikers Robinho and Julio Baptista in the past week, further reducing Owen's chances of a regular first-team spot in the coming season.

The club has made the England star available for transfer even though he scored 16 goals in 26 starts following his transfer from Liverpool a year ago. Owen didn't say which Premier League teams he had spoken to, but he has been linked with Newcastle, Arsenal and Manchester United.

"Real Madrid contacted my advisers over the weekend and explained that they wanted me to stay but that they would not stand in my way if the right opportunity arose for me to return to the Premiership," Owen said in a statement released to Britain's Press Association.

"There has been brief dialogue with three or four Premiership clubs although no formal negotiations of any kind have taken place."

"I am confident that the Real Madrid president, Senor (Florentino) Perez, will have my best interests at heart whatever happens," he added.

Owen is one of three England internationals at Madrid, along with midfielder David Beckham and defender Jonathan Woodgate. He struggled to get picked ahead of Ronaldo or Raul, both of whom are still at the club.

Owen was set to travel to Austria on Wednesday for a two-week training session with the Real Madrid squad. He said it was unlikely he would join another club until after that.

"In the meantime, I am preparing myself physically and mentally for the coming season and hopefully the World Cup which follows it," Owen said.

You know if I were Owen I would say screw all ya'll and come over here!
Can you feel the love? Or lack of it from English teams... I know it is just negotiation tactics so they can get him cheap but I don't like all this stuff over there about how nobody wants him... He is a freakin' England International.
And has been the Captain to boot!

They need to stop trying to get him cheap and just get him...

I know it will probably never happen but I would like to see him over here...

I would go crazy if Michael Owen came and played for RSL, but their is no possible way that could happen.

But we could try for:

25. Carlos Bocanegra -- You're looking at your screen rather oddly right now, aren't you? Who is to say he doesn't transfer back into MLS sometime this fall if he's not playing regularly for Fulham? He knows he needs to see the field if he is to make his mark with the U.S. national team and his contract does run out in January. Stranger things have happened. I'm just throwing it out there.

He probably would come back and play for the Fire though... but as I always say... never say never.

Carlos would be a great pick up However, unless RSL is dead last this year and gets the classic "We Suck" allocation, there is no way RSL could ever get any great Int'l American transfer this year.
Unless we traded an existing player and/or draft picks.

Sven-Goran Eriksson believes it would be "good for England" if Michael Owen signs for

The England striker, who was not a first-team regular at Real Madrid last season, has dropped even further down the Bernabeu pecking order following the summer arrivals of Brazilian pair Robinho and Julio Baptista.

Real Madrid are prepared to let him go and Owen revealed on Wednesday he has had "brief dialogue with three or four Premiership clubs" about a possible return to the Barclays Premiership.

Eriksson has a clear preference where he would like his super striker to play his football.

"What I read, what I have heard is that it might be a possibility that Manchester United takes him and as England coach I should not complain if that is the case," he said.

"For him to work every day with Wayne Rooney can only make England better.

"Michael Owen has been a great player for many years wherever he has played - Liverpool or Real Madrid. For the big games he is always there and he has scored 32 goals for England. That is a lot and he is just 25 years old. He is still young. We forget that sometimes.

"If I was manager of a big club in England I would go for Michael Owen, that is for sure."

Eriksson, however, has reassured Owen that his World Cup prospects will not be harmed in any way if he ends up staying at the Spanish giants even if that means prolonged spells on the bench.

"Whatever he chooses he will always be Michael Owen, he will always be very important for England if he stays at Real Madrid or goes to another club," said the Swede.

"If you look at last season he was very sharp in every England game he played. He didn't play regularly but scored a lot of goals for Real Madrid last season.

"I am not worried about that. If he stays where he is he will play, maybe not every Sunday, but he will play. Then he is fresh for the World Cup, if we qualify."
