Campeonato Brasileiro

Last night I had just finished typing a brilliant post about O Campeonato Brasileiro (Brazilian Soccer League) and then the newsgroup went down. So, I don't remember everything I posted, but I'll try to summarize here:

1. I'd like to start a discussion about Brazilian League soccer if there are other fans of Brazilian soccer here.

2. My favorite Team is Santos. (Vai Peixe!)

3. Brazilian soccer is similar to MLS, most good players go to Europe, but there are a few, like Robinho that stay in Brazil.

I found a good site about Brazilian soccer at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campeonato_Brasileiro

I've been watching the games on Gol TV and so I'm starting to learn the teams better and the players. Even though I served a mission in Brazil, I never got to see a game while I was there and I never really got behind a team until later. I picked Santos as my favorite team because I actually lived in Santos for a while and it was my favorite area and because they were Pele's team. I also like Corinthians due to the history behind the team, they were actually a team composed of English workers living in Brazil in the beginning stages of their history.

I hope there is someone here that knows more about it than I do and can help educate me about Brazilian soccer.

Actually Robinho is going to Real Madrid

Robinho, 21, will join Real, who signed fellow Brazilian international Julio Baptista from Sevilla on Friday, on a five-year deal on 25 August.

Yeah, I heard the European teams were after him. It's too bad that the Brazilian teams can't afford to keep their talent in Brazil, but then again maybe it's good that the players can get so much money overseas and hopefully they put it back into the Brazilian economy.

I'd love to talk futebol Brasileiro, but I have neither GolTV or even Fox Soccer Channel. So my knowledge of the league is piddly. O meu time é o Grêmio, mas eu nem sei se estão na primeira divisão aínda. A última vez que olhei, não parecia muito bem não.

(I hate writing with accent marks. There has to be a better way.)

Grêmio is in Série B right now. It's similar to other leagues where if you play well enough you're in Série A, but if you don't perform well in Série A you get rebaixado down to Série B. If you can get Gol TV where you live, I highly recommend it, you wont be disappointed. Santos plays Botafogo today. Santos is only 3 points out of first place with 32 points. But the game showcased on Gol TV today will be Corinthians vs. Ponta Preta. I had to set my DVR to record that one.

And it seems the good Argentine players go to Brazil, mostly Corintios, as of late... Tevez, Mascherano.

I did get to see the Copa Lib semifinal Sao Paulo vs. River Plate on TV when I was in Argentina in July. Sao Paulo looked great in that game-- they just sat back and played very tight defense, let River pound against a wall of defenders, then every once in a while they would mount a technically perfect counterattack right over the top of the River defense. Dead on passes and beautiful shots. The game was actually a great comparison of Brazilian and Argentine soccer. (Although I have to say I wish River had won!).
Sao Paulo has completely fallen apart since their Copa Lib championship and was shockingly close to the relegation zone last I heard, although I haven't checked in a week or two.

Fantastico! Better than the one where the goalie saves the falling dog then spikes it into the air.

Does anybody know where there is a video of this? I have never seen it, but I heard about it.

That commercial was awesome. :batman:
