Brian Dunseth

I read that Clint Mathis told Fox Sports Friday that Brian Dunseth would be playing for RSL. So I dug up the old article we had on him.

http://www.soccertimes.com/americans/2004/nov09.htm
Bodens avoided relegation from the Superettan, Sweden's second division by two points, but American defender Brian Dunseth is not expected back. Steve Pastorino, the general manager of Major League Soccer's new expansion franchise Real Salt Lake told a Swedish newspaper the club is interested in Dunseth who played for the U.S. under-17 men under John Ellinger who recently left that job to coach Salt Lake.

I remember that when we talked about it and I don't know why it never took off! Maybe too much Mathis debate and it got lost in the shuffle!

Maybe he will be one of the 4 new signings Pastorino was talking about... any speculation on the other three?

Great find Prime, thanks.

Dunseth would make a good addition to this roster. I too am wondering who the other 3 will be. Anybody got any clues?

That's a very instructive article, and it certainly does say that Dunseth will be playing for us. One wonders if that is really set in stone, or just a rumor he heard. It's also very instructive of the problems that Mathis has had with Coaches.

Some coaches act like they think they are gods and don't anyone even think of disagreeing. Things like honesty and fair play, are for other, lesser beings. In other countries these attitudes are much more prevelent. You would think that someone who earns his living motivating players to their highest level of performance would see that bullying, shouting, and backstabbing isn't necessarily the best way to achieve the goal, but an amazing number of them don't.

So it is encouraging to note that John Ellinger (my hero) understands that. He is noted for treating players fairly and being honest in his dealings with them. With that attitude, he truly has a chance to help his players reach their highest level of performance.

Way to go, John!

I think a lot of coaches see the success guys like Jerry Sloan, Rick Majerus, Urban Meyer, Bruce Arena, and Alex Ferguson have and attribute that success to the sort of "tough-guy" attitude those choaces give-off. But a lot of them don't understand that those coaches find a way to get the player's respect and trust before they get mean. Obviously around the world they look to different coaches than the ones I listed, but I don't know who the real "tough-guy" coaches are around the world. What's most important for a coach is that his players respect him. After that, each coach has his own way of motivating and really it doesn't matter how you motivate players if they respect you. It certainly appears that players respect Ellinger a lot. Already he can be called a succesful coach if he's earned respect.

Of course he could be terrible when it comes to tactics and making lineups so it might be a little early to call him a hero. You can put 11 super-motivated players on the field, and if they can only kick the ball to the other team they're still going to lose.

I don't disagree with anything you've said here, but just let me add this. The players we are talking about are all top notch, experienced soccer players. They have the skills, and they have the knowlege of the game and it's strategies. It might well be argued that (once they are used to playing together) simply motivating them and letting them loose might well work.

But I agree that there is a lot more to coaching than simply motivating players. I was trying to point out that without that respect, all the rest is an uphill battle.

NEWSFLASH!
FC Dallas trades rights to Brian Dunseth to Real Salt Lake

by Buzz Carrick
January 14, 2005

DALLAS (MNN) - FC Dallas has traded the rights to former Burn defender Brian Dunseth to Real Salt Lake for a 2007 4th round pick. Dunseth, who was last with Dallas in 2003, has been playing in Sweden and his return to MLS to play for Real Salt Lake required movement of his rights from his last team. MLS teams retain the rights to players that leave the league for two years.

Also, these links aren't in English, but they confirm that Brian is coming.
Plus they have some pictures of him, so you can know what he looks like.

A team source says that there are a few contractual loose ends to tie up but Dunseth will play for RSL this year.
