A troll by any other name...

Don’t be a troll

Okay, I’ve been as guilty as anybody else. Hence my newest avatar… But in the future I’m going to try to follow these simple guidelines to erase my trolling ways.

1. A troll by definition posts things to try “to disrupt the discussion or to upset its participants.”

2. Trolling isn’t always obvious but is always obnoxious. The most subtle trolling is often the most harmful. Trolling can be packaged with humor, put-on “helpfulness” or condescension.

3. How can you tell if you or somebody close to you has become a troll? Your message is trolling if it:
a. Is intended to disrupt the flow of the thread
b. Is intended to upset somebody else
c. Is intended to draw attention to yourself
d. Is intended to draw somebody else into a confrontation or to get a reaction out of somebody else

Things can be controversial and not be trolling. There’s nothing wrong with stating your opinion on something. From Wikipedia…
Quote:
Various users have different motivations for trolling. A common factor to most of them is the desire to draw attention to the troll. Inflammatory, sarcastic, disruptive or humorous content is posted, meant to draw other users into engaging the troll in a fruitless confrontation. The more attention the troll's activities draw from users, the more persistent the troll's behavior in the forum.

Often, a person will post a sincere message about which they are emotionally sensitive. Skillful trolls know that an easy way to upset them is to disingenuously claim that the person is a "troll". On other occasions, a person may not instantly understand, or fit into the social norms of a forum where most users are the same. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between a user who is merely unfamiliar with the social protocols of a forum, and a user who is intentionally trolling.

I'd say that 99% of the conflicts on this forum have been caused by "trolling" as defined on this wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll

I am recommending that Neil read through that and make a list of rules that the moderators can try to enforce so that things are more consistent around here.

Anyone catch the baseball game last night? The Astros stand about as much of a chance of winning now as fuegote making People's next "50 Most Beautiful People" list.

    Anyway, Rep me, please!

about 99% of the posts on this board would then be trolling posts. everyone would be a troll.

My definintion: Someone why signs up for one day to post nonsense to get the board upset. Someone who is completely out of control and knows no limits to his ignorance and idiocy.

JasonMa for the most part isn't even a troll.

Once rules are placed on this board, look for it to be a little bit more quiet. People don't like being censored if they are not trolls.

another reason why this board is cougarboard.com, and the rcb board is utefans.net
