The 3 C's of Good Fanmanship Creativity: be creative in your support, or insults
Class: keep some class, AKA no spitting, no throwing objects, not a lot of foul-mouthedness Control: self-control is closely related to the 2nd C... I'd like to thank the Loyalists for doing a good job of living the 3 C's of fanmanship. I appreciate the RCB and their rabid, no-holds-barred approach to being an RSL fan, but I think if we all tried a little harder to live the 3 C's, the games would be a lot more fun, and even friendlier for first-timers and young'ns. I haven't always been the best at living the 3 C's, and that's one reason why I know that they're a good idea. During the Costa Rica/USA game, a Costa Rican woman asked my fiancee to shut me up because I was saying some pretty foul things in spanish. Hostile environments can be expected at soccer games, but I don't want to see MLS turn into Italy or Argentina in terms of hooliganism. I think we should all be aware of the lines we cross. Thanks, Loyalists! --Geoff

oh, yes the three cΒ΄s are right. I seem to me, that these things were lost today in hannover. it was more like supporters vs. team and coach π . perhaps your three players tell you something about the match today, i think they were there.

π The Loyalists believe firmly in the 3...okay 4 C's. We have always tried to live them. We want the fun and excitement of being supporters, but not the anger and lack of control that leads to hooliganism. Also, we want a family friendly environment.

I don't think anyone would argue against those 3 Cs, but I think you could make the case that different supporters groups have them in different orders of importance.
This is another good thing about the RCB moving to the other side of the stadium next year, there will be a clear choice in atmosphere between E32 and E38, and people can gravitate to where they feel they belong and to the section that best meets their expectations from a soccer supporters club. As for SLC ever having true hooliganism...the factors involved in true soccer hooliganism are complex and plentiful (and largely socio-economic and based on things outside the stadium). Very few of those factors are present in the American fanbase. Who are the wildest supporters in the US? Section 8 without a doubt...and that just because Soldier Field lets them get away with flares and smoke bombs and because they have excellent leadership and tons of members. The only thing I never want to see enter American fandom is the racism that you see in other places (especially parts of England, Italy, France, etc.). Monkey noises, bananas on the field, anti-Paki chants, etc. are not likely to show up in MLS anytime soon anyways. Also, MLS has just 10 years under the belt and soccer fan traditions in other countries have been building up for 100 years or more. On the one hand we have to be aware that traditions we build now will be there for our great-grandchildren, but we also have to be aware that traditions and values of any sort tend to be arbitrary, flexible, and abstract. We sing in conservative Christian churches today songs to melodies that were viewed as wild, decadant, and sacreligious 200+ years ago. All a lone supporter can do is be true to him or herself and have fun in the best way they know how. Last edited by Old Ska : 11-06-2005 at 08:21 AM.
