Soccer is a failure in the US, didn't you know? Please email this clown and berate him. Thank you.
Soccer's Showing in U.S. Warrants an Apology: Scott Soshnick Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Christian Gomez, who plays for the Major League Soccer team in Washington, which goes by the Euro-esque name of D.C. United, felt so guilty about getting ejected from a recent game that he issued a written apology to his teammates, the fans, the franchise and the league. When will MLS officials follow his lead and go public with their mea culpa for exaggerating the league's promise and potential? No matter what those associated with MLS say, professional soccer in the U.S. isn't the next big thing. It isn't even close. Soccer is poised for nothing more than niche-sport status, settling in alongside, if not behind, the likes of indoor football and beach volleyball. http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000039&cid=soshnick&sid=a2CWFcO331XY

What a joke. And of course there's no mention at all of RSL or its supporters - 'cause that would only weaken his argument. Best ignore the facts if they can't be reconciled with the point you're trying to make.

RSL isn't the best refutation of this Resentido's crap.
Chivas 1.0 - America de Mexico drew 88,000 on a work night in the LA Coliseum. Well, Galaxy fans chipped in a couple thousand to that figure. The Interligas tournament draws huge crowds, as does the Tri whenever it plays up here. Of course, I've never met this writer. But he strikes me as the kind of guy who hates soccer because so many of its administrators & power brokers have too much melanin.

This guys KNOWS that the MLS will only be a niche sport? How many columnists spouted that about the NBA before Michael Jordan came along? And at that, how many company's stay at top forever? I'm sure this guy back in 1985 would've said the same type of thing about Wal-mart. he would've said "give up you lil' hicks in Bentonville, you'll never be as big as KMart and Sears". This is the guy who in 1993 would've told Starbucks they're full of stupid dreams in thinking they could sell people $5 drinks in coffee shops and spread across the US and the world. This is the guy that would've told you to buy stock in Montgomery Ward cuz they'll never go out of business.
Now if he old the NHL that they'll never be anything more than a niche sports, I can see that. :D __________________

So this guy obviously has an agenda, but that doesn't make his opinions any less valid. The sucess of MLS is not assured by any stretch and there are far more people who would agree than disagree with him.
PS Thanks for trying to make this a racial thing. Lord knows we could use some more of that. __________________

These soccer bashers are not a concern. They are certainly entitled to their opinions and the fact remains that MLS and soccer in general in the USA have long way to go.
But when I think back to where we were in 1989, or even 1996, I have to chuckle at the negativism. The Tony Kornheisers and Frank DeFords of the sports media establish never miss an opportunity to belittle soccer, but their playbook hasn't changed in over a decade. Get ready--they'll be back in the leadup to the World Cup next year. In the end, it usually comes down to the fact that they don't want soccer to succeed. Why? Who knows? Reading between the lines, they seem to have a zero sum gain outlook on sports--if we let soccer in, something else has to drop out. Or they just don't want to take the time to learn a sport they're not familiar with. Whatever. We don't need them. Again--this kind of thing is no longer a concern. Soccer is now a part of the professional sports scene in America. A few articles by the unconvinced in the media won't change that. They are now irrelevant. __________________ Easy to be hard; hard to be smart. --Old Gunny Last edited by Rover : 11-13-2005 at 09:04 PM.
