www.socceramerica.com WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT WATCH 2. Portland-Notre Dame game sells out in six minutes It took just six minutes for the 5,000 or so tickets for Friday’s Portland-Notre Dame NCAA Division I Women's Tournament quarterfinal game at Merlo Field to sell out. Phone lines to TicketsWest jammed, and the ticket seller’s web site froze. UP officials were reportedly hoping to announce plans for the game to televised by a local station. RECORD BOOK
2. Portland breaks attendance record Portland’s capacity crowd of 4,892 in Friday’s quarterfinal win over Notre Dame helped the Pilots set a new NCAA women's single-season attendance record of 40,841, breaking the previous mark of 39,830 held by North Carolina in 2001. The Pilots also moved ahead of Texas A&M into the top spot for average attendance in 2005 at 3,403 fans per match. The North Carolina women hold the record for average home attendance with 3,983 set in 2001. New Mexico leads all men’s teams with an average attendance of 3,410 fans. With another big crowd expected for the Lobos’ quarterfinal game against California, UNM should break the men’s single-season record for average and total attendance since the NCAA began keeping attendance records in 1998. Connecticut drew 64,535 fans in 1983 and averaged 4,287 fans in 1982. Both are believed to be men’s college records. | |||||
