Maradona’s sad story

While I’ll admit that The Diego was one of the all-time greats of football, the contrast between what Pele has done with his life since he retired and the constant downward spiral of The Diego is quite remarkable.

Do you think it was the drugs? Maradona is looking very unfit and quite aloof!
Wow he is a far cry from the good ol' days!
Maradona in Greece for a first division match.

It is a shame that he has tumbled so far from grace when he could have been an ambassador to the beautiful game, much like Pele

Could have been!

In the USA Bonds and Jordan are more significant than Washington & Adams because of our affluence. In Argentina Maradona is more significant that San Martin & Bolivar because of their poverty.

Democracy arrived in Argentina in the early 80's. Prior to this the military triumverat ruled the country and tens of thousands disappeared. Even winning WC '78 on home soil couldn't match what Diego would do later. While the ghosts of Peron walked the cobblestone streets and young men died on the Faulkland Islands after the military abandoned the war with out telling them, Maradona was conquering Europe. First Spain, then Italy, and most importantly England in '86.

Diego was in a position to be the Argentine Weah. He could have been anything or done anything he wanted. But all he needed was the supply of coke. It killed his will and his mind. His body lingered.

There's probably more to say but its all eulogy. What a tragic figure.

I was working with Brazilians in LA in '94.

They just about blew out blood vessels, trying to stifle their smirks when Diego's drug test turned up to have more foreign substances in it than the Jordan River.

We can make Lemonade from the Lemons of soccer's 2nd class status in this country.

Up until this most recent decade, US soccer players have not been able to afford Meisterbrau; let along Peruvian Marching Powder.

Even now, what coke dealer is going to hang around MLS players when the local AAA baseball team pays his potential customers better?

The definitive biography is his autobiography, “Yo soy el Diego.”

I was in LA in ’94 in the home of some Argentines after Argentina’s exit from the World Cup. I was talking with the wife when her husband arrived home from the Texas match. He was totally crushed. He went straight to his room. First, Maradona is ousted from the tournament, and then Argentina is ousted from the tournament. A double-wammy. Argentina’s hopes were so high that The Diego could restore his previous luster and lead their side to glory once again. But, as it turned out, it was the beginning of the end for Argentina’s hegemony in world-soccer. Let’s hope that with their recent Olympic gold medal, that supremacy has begun to return. With the likes of Carlitos Tevez and Pablito Aimar, who can doubt?

You’ll want to check out this great bio at Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diego_Maradona

Its got a great clip of the goal of the century at the bottom. While you’re there, check out the second greatest goal (Owen) and third greatest goal (Pele).

Check out the tribute page as well.
