Steal of the year

Steal of the year

By former Metros midfielder-forward Clint Mathis, who, for some reason, managed to coax a no-cut contract of $410,000 (sixth highest in the league) out of expansion team Real Salt Lake to come back and play in MLS. We all know what happened. Mathis was a total dud, connecting for only three goals and four assists before he was dealt to the Colorado Rapids in December.

Dumbest signing of the year

By Real Salt Lake. See above item for details.

You know hindsight is a wonderful thing. If Mathis had played up to his potential, it might have been the greatest signing of the year. But because of Clint, the FO looks like a bunch of idiots.

I think Clint had us all fooled, because I do remember the excitement around here when he was signed. Oh well, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Could just be an off year for Clint. Could be that he's washed up. But like reAl point out, hindsight makes it easy to see.

I don't know that he had many people fooled really. He has the ability to play and make highlight reel type plays. With Clint teams and fans just hope that maybe THIS time he'll be consistent. During the course of last year there were times when he played like a man on a mission. He scored some nice goals and, especially at the start of the season, had some beautiful assists. If he could contribute more than he detracted and do it consistently, he would be a wonderful asset. Colorado fans seem to have the same dream that we had: Maybe this is situation where Cleetus settles in and becomes the Cleetus of old. Maybe...

Unfortunately I think the Cleetus of old is well... old. But those occasional highlights still leaves fans and teams dreaming of "what if". But really "what if" has always been the thought with Clint. He's never been very consistent and I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Good job by the FO to realize this, cut their losses, and bring in a player capable of filling more of the team's needs and being more offensively productive.

oh yes, that sounds familiar. you have to know, i never was positive about Hannovers former coach Ewald Lienen, but everybody got a second chance, if somebody showed that he really want to play he did so. so it made me a bit irritated, that a good player like clint sitting on the tribune. Lienen said, that he had a very bad stance. In those days i thought that Lienen is an idiot, but I had a look to rsl and clint the whole season and maybe Lienen wasnt so wrong at all.

Some people just never learn award

To Flamengo and former Brazilian international defender Junior, who was slapped with a red card in a 2-2 tie with archrival Vasco da Gama on March 20, only days after he had been given a temporary reprieve from a five-match suspension.

Either that was a really bad game, or the referee just doesn't get it!
