2005 Top 10 local sports stories
5. Real Salt Lake
Utah's second major-league franchise was a huge hit in its inaugural season — at least in the stands.
In its debut Major League Soccer season, Real Salt Lake averaged 18,037 fans, second only to the Los Angeles Galaxy's 24,204. The product on the field, however, was about what you'd expect from an expansion club, as RSL went 5-22-5 without a road victory.
RSL was counting heavily on former U.S. National Team star Clint Mathis, but he was a major disappointment with just three goals in 27 games. He was traded to Colorado last month.
On the final day of the season, owner Dave Checketts announced his intentions of building a permanent stadium for RSL in Sandy.

I was just about to post the DesNews article but I was stunned when i saw that BYU Football ranked higher than RSL.
That really caused some disorientation. Like in a rip in the space time continuum kind of way. Obviously they did not watch any BYU Football this past year.

**Sigh**

Others worth mentioning:
• WORLD CUP SOCCER: More than 40,000 fans packed Rice-Eccles Stadium on June 4 to watch the U.S. National Team clobber Costa Rica 3-0 in the team's first-ever appearance in Utah. "It's really the first time we've felt so at home in qualifying," said U.S. coach Bruce Arena about the sixth-largest crowd for a World Cup qualifier on American soil.

It was good to see them get teh attendance figures right. But did we really win only FIVE games last year? I must have blocked out at least 18 of those 22 losses. It was a bit tough to read and remember how bad our record was.

It was a LONG season. Even longer when you consider 3 of those 5 wins came in the first 8 matches and only 2 in the last 25 (counting the US Open Cup loss to an A-league team)
