PC Character

This guy sounds like a character, to say the least.

By the time "Super Dell" Schanze showed up at the Sandy theater complex, word was out that he was closing his Totally Awesome Computers stores after 10 years in the business. And though the collapse was prefaced by dismal sales, mounting legal problems, and an IRS inquiry, Schanze had his own culprit.
"This is thanks to all of you," Schanze told reporters gathered outside the Jordan Commons Megaplex. "All the media in Utah are liars and murderers .

He's definitely an interesting character. I used to live in his ward, and he was a nice guy that just went over-the-top alot. That tends to offend some people.

It just suprises me that these companies can make it. It seems like a tough business to be in.

His model was sound, and he was legitimately growing his business successfully. His problems started when he stareted pissing people off with some of his antics, and not just in a "that guy is kind of annoying" way, but in a "that guy is a total moron" way. He had excellent products, excellent deals, excellent service, and memorable marketing. His only enemy was himself.

I sincerely beleieve (from working in the media and the information I have seen) that he is getting railroaded on those charges and that the media is sensationalizing his flaws somewhat because that is the easy way out.

But that said, Aerick is right... his biggest enemy is himself.

Railroaded? He was speeding through a residential neighborhood and had been asked repeatedly to slow down as he made it a habit to speed through that neighborhood on his way to the takeoff point for gliding. He is a guy who thinks that the law is for other people.

Was anyone else relieved when he sold his gun range?

That is exactly what people think this issue is about... however, his whole legal issue is whether he was within his rights in how he used his gun.

He open admits that he sped through the neighborhood. That isn't the issue, however, people who haven't seen all the public records available in the case make blanket statements based on what the media has portrayed. Both parties admit that some sort of threat was made involving rocks (however, the differ on what that threat was and how large the rock was).

So, the general percetion is based on media portayal. I have been on the media side of the fence and have seen all the public documents. What I have seen is lazy journalists looking for a sensational piece to drive ratings. As a result the general public has a very skewed perception of what the legal arguments are in this case.

I obviously haven't been to law school, but based on the information that is public record, interviews with both parties involved and my understanding of the law, based on interviews of serveral lawyers conducted by ABC4, Super Dell was legally within his rights to do what he did when he pulled his gun. And since this is legal issue based on what he did with his gun, not how fast he drove and where he drove that fast, I believe he is being railroaded based on that fact that people find him annoying.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own oppinion. I just don't think that this case has any legal merit. I don't think what he did was smart. I don't think what he did was right. I don't think the situation warranted his extreme reaction. However, I do think that he was within his legal rights to do what he did when he pulled out his gun to "protect himself."

Of course, when and if more information comes available my perception is open to change.

If you do as many publicly stupid things as he has, perception will never be in your favor.

If a guy repeatedly sped through my neighborhood, I would throw rocks at his car too.

That was not the reason he closed his stores though is it?
He closed his business because he had mounting legal issues and costs in the discriminatory nature. ie Employees and former employees sueing him for discrimination and illegal work practices.

His gun issue was a last straw for the public. People stopped shopping there because of the bad publicity from the gun thing...

You do have to admit that his people skills are extremely lacking. That makes him an easy target for reporters cos they are guaranteed to get a headline because the guy is a complete idiot!
He is not being railroaded he is a willing participant in his own demise!

Which brings us back to what Aerick said... "his only enemy was himself."

Next time I speed through your neighborhood I will watch for flying rocks... fortunatly for everyone... I don't own a gun! 😲
