Soccer newbie question:
1 = Keeper
10 = most skillful

is there anything else I need to know about with numbers?

9 is usually the most lethal striker. He to whom 10 provides incisive passes.

From the article:

"Training's been better without a doubt. It's going to be important for us to continue to train better," said Pope. "Training is supposed to simulate games most of the time, and especially as far as speed of play is concerned."
Pope said it's not realistic to think players can just flip a switch on game day, which seemed to be the mind-set quite often last year."

To any Ellinger apologists, this is another damning comment to how he ran the team (or did the team run him?) last year. No wonder he is known as a "players-coach"...

My two-bits is that even in western european lagues the traditional number's lost a lot of it's old meaning.

Look at a team like Southampton FC, the GKs have numbers 28, 37, 25, 13. A player that's in on loan from another fizzy pop team takes the #10 jersey. And a couple midfielders have the numbers 3 and 4. Maybe it's the amount of movement of players inbetween clubs. It doesn't seem to be the way it used to be.

the same thing has happened in the NFL and american football as well where numbers used to designate what your position was.

It's also a positive that he has learned from last year and is making things better this year. I guess it just depends on whether you want to continue to focus on last year or realize that progress is being made and the team is moving forward. Personally, I'd rather look to the future than worry about the past.

I think that being able to learn from mistakes and improve is a great quality to have. A lot of people refuse to do that, convinced that whatever they are doing is correct and that it is other people that are the problem. I'd much rather be hearing statements that things are better this year no matter how bad, or even good for that matter, things were last year.

I guess if this post makes me an Ellinger apologist, so be it.

Some disagreements will come up due to different formations and position names (fullback/defender), but the traditional numbers were something like this:

1--Starting goalkeeper
2--Right fullback
3--Sweeper or center defender
4--Left fullback
5--Defensive midfielder or center fullback
6--Left winger or left midfielder
7--Right winger or right midfielder
8--Left midfielder or left winger
9--Goalscorer or the main attacker in a team
10--Most skillful player in a team, usually an attacker or midfielder
11--Left midfielder

These used to be mandated, with other numbers added when subs were introduced. FIFA expanded it to 24 for the World Cup, but lately it looks like almost anything goes.

So the only numbers that seem to mean anything now are 1, 3, 9, and 10, and of those only the 10 jersey is still a big honor.

Good for Ballouchy.
