Real Madrid (2) vs. Villarreal (8) [R] 5/7/06

Real Madrid will also be playing at home this weekend but will be facing stiffer competition.

I love the Yellow Submarine, but I will be pulling for RM this weekend. Cheer them now so we can boo them later!

Real Madrid and Villareal played to a 3-3 draw. (Leaving RM up a single pt. over Valencia)

A very enjoyable exciting match. Refreshing to see an official who knows that when a defensive players touches the ball in the penalty area, the offensive team is to be awarded a penalty kick.

What a game.
The tie-breaker belongs to Valencia so Madrid will take 2nd if they win next week or if Valencia loses next week or they both draw. If Valencia wins RM must win. Please just win.

Why does the tie-breaker belong to Valencia? As I see it, RM has a 5-goal differential spread over Valencia.

In Spain the first tie-breaker is head to head.
They drew once and Valencia won the other.

Notice the up arrow next to RM and the down arrow next to Valencia. After their tie yesterday Valencia was in 2nd.

So if they are level on points, how they fared between their two league match-ups is what determines their final position?

I didn't realize this. I assumed it was like other leagues in which goal differential is the determining factor.

From the May 6 La Liga Roundup
Quote:
In Saturday's other matches, Valencia rose into second place with a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid, while Sevilla won 2-0 at relegated Malaga.
Barcelona has 82 points, while Valencia and Madrid have 69 but Valencia is ahead on head-to-head results. Madrid can reclaim second place by at least drawing its home game with Villarreal on Sunday.

RM really needed to win today. Hope they do next Sunday.

RM did tie Villarreal on Sunday so they are a point up in the standings.
If they win next Sunday then they are in. If Valencia tie and RM tie then RM are in. The standings and schedule can be found here...
