Red Bulls vs. Bayern Munich [R] 5/27/06

I can't believe this game isn't going to be televised.

The Bayern Munich team that plays Red Bull New York on Saturday is not their full team, but when you look at this roster you can see that they are still a very formidable lineup:

Goalkeeper: Bernd Drehe

Defenders: Bixente Lizarazu, Georg Niedermeier, Stephan Fuerstner

Midfielders: Sebastian Deisler, Jens Jeremies, Andreas Ottl, Hasan Salihamidzic, Mehmet Scholl, Markus Steinhofer,Rainer Storhas

Forwards: Roy Makaay, Claudio Pizarro, Paulo Guererro

No Kahn? I'd love to see him play in person - hated/loved him for his performance against USA in '02.

Those attendance numbers, I don't understand it, I really don't.

Could it be that the Red Bulls FO just doesn't do anything to promote the games? Or could it be that Giants Stadium is just such a bad stadium or is just so hard to get to that only the die hard soccer fan will go out of their way to attend a match?

What? Is that a type-o?

Maybe not. Maybe it's just the NYC market is sick and tired of getting hit up for these glorified schrimmages.

The previous Wed was a double header, Hoops/Red Bulls and the Colombia/ Ecuador friendly. That drew 52,000+ people, 12,000 more than were at the USA/Costa Rica WCQ on June 4 of last year!

Unfortunate, really, that just a few days later Red Bull played the German side. I'm guessing that people who have money to splurge on one big match choose to see the double header, and that the meaningless scrimage against a heavily depleated German side just wasn't on many people's radar. I imagine if the match had been in, say, Chicago or Houston, places with huge populations that maintain strong ties to their German ancestry, the attendace would have been much greater.

Furthermore, I think many people jump at the chance to get far, far away from the New York area over the long weekend. I'll bet lots of hardcore soccer fans made the drive to Conneticut to see the USA/Venezuela and USA Latvia matches.

Bayern Munich's media director kept an online diary while the team was in the US.

Good find there Arelius.

It seems like Bayern Munich was more interested in relaxing and having fun than playing the game against Red Bulls. Can you blame them though? It's still too bad a bigger crowd couldn't show up for the game.

I was at the RB/Dallas & Ecu vs. Col match on last Wed and there was basically no promotion for the Bayern game.
