Who do you think will win The Yashin Award for best goalkeeper in 2006?

Since 1994, FIFA has awarded The Yashin Award to the best goalkeeper of the World Cup tournament. Past recipients include:

1994 Michel Preud'homme (Belgium)
1998 Fabien Barthez (France)
2002 Oliver Kahn (Germany)

Those of you who picked "other", who did you choose? Kasey Keller?

For your information, Petr Cech was named World Goalkeeper of the Year in late 2005. He was a big reason Chelski won the Premiership two years in a row.

How can you leave Keller off of that list?

He is arguably the best keeper in the world.

I guess I assumed that the US wouldn't get as far as the above countries and hence, Keller wouldn't be considered...

Besides, is Keller better than Lehamann? Robinson? van der Sar? In my opinion, Cech is the best in the world at the moment.

Arguably Keller is the best... I had my pick, I would take Keller above Lehman and Robinson... van der Sar it would be close. However, historically speaking you don't have to have a big tourney run to win the award.

Keller is much better than most of that list and on par with the three you mentioned. Is Keller the best? Perhaps, but that is why I said arguably the best.

Is Keller better than Cech?

Not in my estimation.

Keep in mind that this award isn't going to be just about who is better so much as who does really well for a team that does well. Barthez won it after France won the WC. Kahn got it after seeming to carry Germany to the final by humself. If the US make it to the semi's, my vote is for Keller cuz it's likely he'd be a key part of that. But I voted for Casillas. I think he's got the skills, he's getting old enough and I think Spain is due to make a strong showing again.

I wouldn't call Cech the best in the world. He has a great defense in front of him for his club. Sure, he's matured the last 2 years but he had plenty of moments during Euro04 where he looked like junior high gym class GK more than world class.
