Gooch to Boro

SkySports is reporting that EPL side Middleborough are dealing for US defender Oguchi Onyewu, whom they refer to as an "American Ace".

Sweat lord, for any and all players DO NOT MOVE TO BORO. They're going to be relegated.

Gooch and his club would be smart to wait until after the World Cup. I believe his stock will rise and both will have much more leverage to negotiate a good deal (and a better club).

Good to see it was the usual rumor. I don't blame Gooch for keeping his options open but I think as long as he looks good at the World Cup, he can do better than Middlesbrough. That club has a lot of big question marks hanging over it right now. Getting Boateng to committ was agood sign for them. But it wasn't that long ago that Schwartzer, JFH and Queadrie [sic] were talking about leaving. Viduka may leave for Austrlia. JFH if he stays is no spring chicken. They need defensive help since even if Southgate plays he'll be 33-34 & Ugo is 35-36. I'm not sure Mendieta is going to come back next year and be the kind of player he was just 2 years ago (he'll turn 34 later next season + has had a few serious injuries the last 5 years). And I have hard time buying into the idea of a 27 yr old from the Portugese league making a huge impact. As long as Doula [sic] fills his role he'll be ok but I don't that'll be enough. I really should say they'll be relegated. But I think they've got more than the usual number of question marks floating around and will likely at best have yet another year where they get 46 points and finish 14th. But if a few things go wrong (Schwartzer leaves, Viduka + JFH leave, Mendieta is in bad form) they could have a bad scare. And maybe that would be a good experience for Gooch. But I'd rather see him go play for a good upcoming manager like Jewell. Or heck, maybe Blackburn will splash a lil' cash and we'll see him partnered up with Ryan Nelson.

Well, we'll wait and see. I'd think the smart move would be to wait.

More so, I'm waiting to see how much of this is rumor completely made up or rumor based on a player's agent having some talks with a club. For example, I'm not sure how much I buy that Gooch has left the camp in Germany to go take a medical. Is that something they'd really be allowed to do, especially a couple days before the WC starts? Or at that is he in talks with Boro just to see what they're willing to spring to do some real bargaining after the WC?

The other thing I've found is these things get reported like they're final before they finally are. For example, 2 other Boro moves for Doula and Huth aren't final. IIRC technically they've only agreed to a transfer fee with the other clubs, not to the point where it's final and they've agreed to personal terms.

If you go to www.ussoccer.com there is photos of him with the team but if you look at the photo gallery when U.S. visits Rathaus he is not in the team photo.

The same question could be asked of how Andriy Shevchenko was able to be at Chelsea signing on the dotted line a few days ago while his team was preparing for their WC opener...
