Yellow Cards

I heard that FIFA wanted to crack down even more this Cup, and it seems like there have been quite a few cards handed out. Including the 8 given just now in France/Switzerland, the total is 62 in 13 matches, almost 5 a match. Do any of you stat experts know how this rate compares to previous cups? It will be interesting if this rate stays the same throughout the tournament, if refs will become more lenient, or if the players will be a little more cautious. Otherwise, it looks like their could be some key suspensions for teams in this round or to start the next round.

If I'm reading this right, it appears there were 272 yellow cards issues in 128 matches during the 2002 WC. That equals an average of 2.125 yellow cards/match.

OK, that would be per team for a total of 4.25 cards between the two teams. Not too much of an increase this year I guess.

I don't think that is per team. I think that is per match. There were 272 total yellow cards per 128 matches. That makes the ratio 2.125 yellow cards per match, not per team. That would be 1.0625 yellow cards per team per match.

Aren't there only 64 matches in the cup? 6 matches per group = 48 group matches, 16 knockout matches (including the 3rd place), for 64 total?

But it takes two teams to play a match. These stats are per team per match.

You are right. There are only 64 matches, but there were 128 teams participating in those 64 matches. The count is still a total for all the matches played, but I should have said 64 matches instead of 128. My bad. The numbers are still good though, 2.125 yellow cards per match (64 total) or 1.0625 per team that played in a match (128 total).

That's what I was saying - 4.25 yellows per match (2.125 per team), NOT 1.0625 per team. Sorry Aero.
