Interesting some of the comments about ESPN’s practice of covering much of the screen with graphics (which for instance remind us for about the 25th time that the losing team will be eliminated, Poland has never ever beaten Germany, or that USA will play Italy on Saturday). Those of around a long time remember TNT’s World Cup coverage in 1990 when they would have screens like “Keys to the game” or “upcoming schedules” completely cover the entire screen for a good 30 seconds while the game was in progress.

At least ESPN isn’t running commercials during the matches like TNT used to. And while I feared that they would do the split screen commericals during the World Cup like they do in the MLS broadcasts, they fortunately have not done so in the broadcasts I have watched the last week.

Sidenote: MLS/ESPN have also abandoned the idea of split-screen commericals this year, so no fear of it happening during WC matches.
