France is in almost the same situation as the US was in its third match. France has to win or they are going home. A draw will not do. Even if France wins, if Switzerland and S. Korea draw, then that will mean that Switerland, S. Korea and France all will have 5 pts a piece.

Hence, France needs to get as many goals as possible in case their advancement to the next round is based on goal differential.

Can they do that? Heck, they're playing Togo.

Will they do that? That's a whole other question all together...

Why doesn't it surprise me that its 0-0 at the half. France continues to underperform.

So much talent and so few results. There's always the second half but I'm starting to see a pattern here.

If nothing changes in the second half, this is going to be the biggest story of the Cup.

Two goals in 5 minutes and France are presently through to the Round of 16.

And, if things stay the way they presently stand, it sets up a juicy Spain-France match next Tuesday.

Pop quiz: Anybody know (without looking it up) which is the only team in the World Cup to have not allowed a goal thus far?

Hint: You don't have their goalkeeper on your fantasy team, or any of their defenders most likely (now I wish I did).

Very interesting. I had to look it up. Chalk that up as another one of the surprises of the tournament.

Another intersting fact is that Italy would have been able to boast no goals against as well were it not for their own goal against the US.

There are only 7 teams that have allowed 1 goal so far. (Six if you don't count the Italy own goal.)

To continue this theme:

The biggest goal differentials so far:
Argentina: 7
Spain: 7
Germany: 6
Brazil: 6

The smallest goal differential of those that qualified for the Round of 16:
Australia: 0

It just proves what we already knew. You gotta put the ball in the back of the net if you want to advance.

Someone should let The Bruce in on this secret...
