Is there a Morelia thread? (R)

Franco out at Morelia

July 19, the Monarchs are coming.

They just fired their coach, La Opinion says.

So their players will probably be trying to impress the new boss (and the article doesn't say who he is.)

Has there been any publicity on this match whatsoever? I've heard very little about this match (maybe the press is too busy covering the stadium saga) Wondering if they are trying to promote this in the Latin-American areas (including West Valley, Midvale and the West Side of SLC?)

When the Blitzz played a Mexican second division side in their first year, there was a tremendous Latin American presence in the stands that night. You'd think for top division Morelia the same could easiliy occur.

That's a good question.

I have not heard any radio commercials for the game and I did not see any ads in the most recent Spanish language newspaper that I read.

Chad Sackett used to play in the Liga Latinoamericana and, in theory, he and JC Perea should be on the case.

Unless all the budget to promote this game was pulled and reassigned to hire some moving vans.

A quick check of the official site says that this is a double header.

2 amateur teams from the Liga Primera de Ogden will be playing first. So you'd figure that their players & fans will talk up the game.

Also, Morelia is owned by TV Azteca and its affiliate Azteca America has shown some RSL games on channel 66. The local Azteca America channel might publicize this game to promote the fact that they will be showing Morelia's official Liga Mexicana games.

I seem to remember very little publicity about the Blitzz-Tijuana match (but of course don't listen to or read a lot of Latin radio/newspapers) but people apparently knew about the game and there was a great turnout (albeit cheering mostly for the visitors). Mariachi band hired by Del was a great touch. Hope we get the same great atmosphere this time around.

Article in Spanish

Here's an article about the Morelia game.

It's dated 12 July, but it says that RSL had not officially announced the game yet because Morelia had not signed the contract.

The "print" version of El Estandar has a big ad from the teams that are going to be playing in the first game.

I was planning on making this, but may not due to family obligations. And I was really looking forward to this one. :P

Morelia brought their "full roster" up to the US, this article says.

They were supposed to play Atlas in Long Beach (?) yesterday. But La Opinion did not have anything on it. Maybe it was closed door?

I bought last year's Morelia jersey. I can't remember if it's home or away. I think it was the away. But other than missing pockets, it's nice for bikign with big bright red and yellow stripes and a comfy shirt.
