Well, yes, if teams lose games that benefits us. However, Colorado has a game in hand, unlike Houston, plus RSL still has a game left against Houston. That's six points in the equation, which results in Colorado being ahead of Houston in the imaginary mathematical race to the playoffs from RSL's perspective.

Well, if Colorado wins their next game, they're still a point behind Houston once we're all even on games. At that point, is the reasoning that we control our own destiny more if Houston has fewer points? Obviously Houston is still in reach, but I'm not sure that they're more in reach than the Crapids, especially after the Fire kills them on Wednesday.
Plus, I refuse to root for the Crapids under ANY circumstances. Last edited by nsps : 09-11-2006 at 06:02 PM.

No, the reasoning is that RSL controls the destiny of 3 of Houston's points since they play them, while they have no remaining games against Colorado. This is all just magic number math, and doesn't take into consideration things like opponent strength or fan dislike.

From MLS webpage, the official tiebreaking for 2005, appears same for 2006. So, we need have a better head to head record with any team with which we are tied. TEAM-STANDINGS TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES The team awarded the highest position in the MLS standings will be the team with the greatest number of points as determined by the point system. Ties will be broken according to the following system (NOTE: If two clubs remain tied after first club advances during any step, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-club format): 1) The highest position shall be awarded to the team with the better win/loss record in current regular season games against all other teams equal in points. (head-to-head competition) 2) If the teams are still equal in the standings, the highest position shall be awarded to the team with the greater goal difference against all other teams during the regular season. (goal differential) 3) If the teams are still equal in the standings, the highest position shall be awarded to the team scoring the greatest number of total goals against all other teams during the regular season. (total goals) 4) If the teams are still equal in the standings, the procedures described in this section shall be applied only to games played on the road by each team against all other teams during the regular season. (road 1-3) 5) If the teams are still equal in the standings, the procedures described in this section shall be applied only to games played at home by each team against all other teams during the regular season. (home 1-3) 6) If the teams are still equal in the standings, the highest position shall be awarded to the team with the fewest team disciplinary points during the regular season. 7) If the teams are still equal in the standings, the highest position in the standings shall be determined by the toss of a coin.

I'm afraid the playoffs are out of reach now. It would be nice to end up with a dozen wins and 40+ points though. __________________
