Loved the "flagship franchise" dig. For those new to the league, Bill Urban is referring to MLS' thinly disguised--and COMPLETELY unsuccessful--attempts to make Metro a championship team. You know, that old "got to have a winning team in New York" mantra that all pro sports leagues believe. Lots of big name, high priced players (and coaches)through New York, but still no trophies.

MLS even moved the league office to New York to increase the league's profile with the big TV networks. Funny, but isn't FSC based in LA? Just a thought.

Anyway, great article--thanks for posting, Prime. And good on the mysterious C10 for taking point on the venture.

I voted for Rocky Mountain Classic. It reminded of the Super ClΓ‘sico between River and Boca in Buenos Aires.

I voted for the Rocky Mountain Cup, but I really liked the title of the Rocky Mountain Rumble. Why wasn't that a selection? I've seen it mentioned in other posts.

Also, I thought a derby was between two teams from the same city, so why were one of the choices the Rocky Mountain Derby when the teams are not even in the same state let alone the same city?

Just wondering!

GO ReAL!!!!!!

The list on the website is a compilation of the most popular suggestions sent into the C10 from the form that was originally posted on www.realrapidscup.com
If you don't see what you like it was either not suggested or not suggested as much as the others.

About Derby's
I am not familiar with the origin of the term Derby... However I can offer that the heated rivalry between Nottingham Forest and Derby County in the English Championship Division was refferred to as a Derby and they are from two cities in close proximity, nevertheless, separate cities... even separate counties. Nottingham Forest being from Nottinghamshire and Derby County in the City of Derby in Derbyshire.

Hope that helps

The real answer is that it sounds like a wrestling commercial! πŸ˜‰

The world has gotten a lot smaller, over the years. Neighboring states, neighboring cities, what's the difference? Anyway, this is the USA! We do things our own way.:D

To clarify, the term "derby" comes from the Earl of Derby who founded a horse race in Surrey during the 18th Century that came to be known as the Epsom Derby (the big race of the year). Obviously this was the precursor to the Kentucky Derby, among others, although the English use the original pronunciation (sounds like "darby").

Don't know when the word was applied to soccer, but it can mean a rivalry between teams from the same city or the same general area. So we can get London Derbies or the Milan Derby, but also the Midlands Derby or the Yorkshire Derby (take your pick on the teams involved!).

This is sounding really know-it-all, so I'll conclude. The Real-Rapids competition is well within the meaning of the term "derby."

Of course, I voted for Rocky Mountain Cup.

Excellent post Rover...

I should have looked that up but I have to concede that most if not all of my historic knowledge of Soccer/Football comes from a UK website! I have posted this link before but it was awhile ago! This site has comprehensive searchable entries about the history of Soccer.
Everything you want to know and even didn't know you wanted to know about Soccer culture... http://www.footballculture.net/index.html

I have always found an answer there... on this occassion, however, I just didn't look it up!

Thanks Rover. :D

Thanks! I hadn't seen the site before--great tip. My wife may not be quite so thankful since I now have yet another soccer site to surf, but she's a soccer fan too so it won't take me long to get her into also.

Thanks again!
