Batistuta (or Batigol)

Wow. I never thought I'd see this day when one of Soccer's legends steps down from professional play. Batigol has retired from footy. It is a sad day in the world of football. Bati is truly one of the classy figures in world footy.

Great player, and from all accounts a good guy too. Put his family first, played the game tough but fair, and was a dominating presence in attack on every team he played for.

I guess I'll always associate him with Fiorentina, where he was a living legend to the locals. But he made it clear that his greatest achievement was playing for Argentina. He could have claimed Italian citizenship (by ancestry and residence), but he would only play for Argentina.

I wish him all the best in whatever he does next. He did Argentina proud.

Wait...is he "quitting soccer" retiring, or just "transferring to the Metros" retiring?

Wasn't he with Fiorentina when they collapsed?

That man single-handedly broke my heart in the Champions League back when the Arse played CL ties at Wembley... that was such a depressing match. 🙁

Batigol was playing for Roma the year they won lo scudetto. He was by far the most popular player in Rome, every fanzine and shop had pictures of Batistuta in it (more than Totti)...

I remember the game they won it, against Parma. Batistuta thought he had a goal but it hit the woodwork. The rebound was kicked in by Totti or Montella or somebody, and the camera showed the absolute joy on Bati's face. He was that type of player, he didn't care if it was him that kicked it in, he was all about the team. I'll always remember Batigol as a Romanista, and as one of the best.
