RSL in the local papers

Yesterday was a big day for RSL and local soccer fans. Below are 2 articles in local papers. I especially like the photo of Gov. Huntsman in front of the RSL banner!

Sure is a nice poster. MLSnet.com had a good one too.
Like have the Governor on our side. We should give him a cool soccer-like name.
Like the GoalMaking Gov or Bend it like Hunstman or something.

"The public-private partnership claim is really euphemism for a handout," the [Utah Taxpayers Association position] paper said. "If the soccer stadium business plan were really sound, taxpayer subsidies would not be needed."

huh? 😕

How does having a sound business plan equate to not needing investment money?

If RSL were all that and a bag of chips, Zions Bank, Wells Fargo, et al would be having fist fights over who gets to lend Dave the money.

But bankers have to turn in balance sheets and income statements and if they have a loan to a US pro soccer team on their balance sheet, their board of directors will fire them. After they are done laughing.

If taxpayer-subsidized sports facilities are such an engine of investement, why didn't Larry H Miller buy the land where the Gateway Center is now, and the Triad Center and those parking lots and the homeless shelters are? Wouldn't he have made a lot of money if he owned that land because taxpayer-funded arenas generate so much revenue?

Why did the Gateway Center need its own subsidy? Shouldn't it have funded itself due to its presence next to the Delta Center?

But on the other hand, the Murray Costco's beer aisle & Southern Exposure will be picking up a lot of business when the Riot Squad visits Mrs Fields' Field.

It simply means that, if it were such a great investment, they wouldn't need PUBLIC money. The private investors would be lining up for a chance to invest.

Careful, it makes him sound a little crooked. I somehow don't think he'd appreciate that. 🙄
