I listened but with only one ear...
heard the cracks on Ruiz... Coach Ellinger has a great sense of humor!
Can he get fined for comments about officiating?
In the UK they fine coaches & players for calling individual officials into question.
They can, however, make broad or general statements.
John handled the questions well... and you could tell which ones he would not answer...
Like when asked... "Do officials get graded on performance and what grade would he give that official in Dallas?"
He successfully changed the subject... and did not answer. But the laugh after the question it was a clear his thoughts were "F"

anyway I heard the whole interview but like I said... with only one ear!

I was wondering the same thing about Ellinger, and also about Pope (for his comments about the official following the game). Is it pretty common practice in MLS to throw fines at players and coaches for these types of comments?

One observation of dubious value from The Loyalist Pacific Platoon (The King's Own Surfriders, if you will):

I detect on the forum a certain amount of angst about the performance of the team. Understandable--it's been a rollercoaster so far. Guess what? It's always a rollercoaster for a soccer fan.

Case(s) in point: What MLS team hasn't had ups and owns so far? LA? Remember that 0-3 drubbing by the Crew in Week One? And looks what's happened to the Crew since then. And look what's happened to LA since then.

Kansas City was a solid pick to win it all this year, and they just lost 0-2 to . . . Colorado? Metro and cheetos still haven't won a game. FCD looked great against us, but struggled with Chicago and laid a 0-0 egg against . . . Colorado? Chicago has looked OK, but can generously be considered lucky to win the last two.

San Jose finally won a game last weekend, but still have major problems with defense. And the defending champs? Three straight losses (counting the drubbing in Ciudad de Mexico) and folks around RFK are wondering if they can get Nellie back on loan from Blackburn.

New England fans are resting easiest, but their turn on the downslope is coming.

The point? The rollercoaster is a way of life in MLS, and all your fellow fans around the league are experiencing it. Sure, FCD fans are riding high but we'll see how they feel after this weekend.

Sure we have problems all over the field. Sure we need to find net to get this thing on the right track. Sure we have off the field issues--we need to draw well and 0-3 losses and two goals in four games don't help the effort.

But hang in there. It's a marathon, not a sprint. We will turn the corner. We'll have ups and downs, but the best is yet to come.

It's interesting, because when he was asked about the officiating during the ESPN2 match, Coach said, "You know I can't comment on the officiating" or something to that effect.

Maybe you can talk all the smack you want in the local media but not on national TV? 😉

You just have to be careful, or you will be fined. Of course, Coach Ellinger may be pushing the envelope on purpose to draw a fine. Sort of like getting thrown out of the game to pump up your team (didn't work for Nowak--DCU's lost two straight).

I'm not worried at all. I have no doubt whatsoever that come Saturday we will win by at least 2 goals (one by Cleatus and one by Kreis)! :D

Of course I have been confident of that same result in all of the previous games, but that's past, so it doesn't count anymore.

Yes, the boys will come through in true champion fashion. I have absolutely no doubt of it. :D

exactly, we are not worried...we are simply discussing the team...like you would do at a pub after a game over soem beers and cigarettes.

it just seems like RSL has no desire to win when away from home...or am i exaggerating?

its ok and im aware of ups n downs ...i mean look at my Juventus.,...GRRRRR

But im sure second half of season will be more fruitfull

To follow up Rover's post, here's an article from mlsnet speaking to slow starts:

http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20050427&content_id=27955&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp

That's right. When people look back on the 2005 MLS champions, Real Salt Lake, not many will remember the 1-1-2 (1-2-1 American-style) start. 🙂
