So let me get this straight. The definition, which I'll assume is what jules said, is predominately found in Utah County, Utah?
BTW I know what ppl call Utah Mormons, but where I come from, it includes everyone in the state, not just one county.

Is anybody else struck by the hypocrisy involved in this? "Utah Mormons" are being judged for being too judgmental. People are getting uptight about their uptightness. They're being labeled as "holier-than-thou" by people who consider themselves superior.

It seems like making broad generalizations about people and labeling them is the lazy man's way of understanding the world. It's much more difficult to see the complexity in the world and allow for it than it is to make broad categories and stuff people into them.

That's just my take on it. Feel free to rip it apart. I enjoy hearing different viewpoints. It's the spice of life.

I don't think that being more judgemental than other people is a defining feature of being a Utah Mormon. It will often show itself in the kinds of decisions Utah Mormons make, but I honestly don't think Utah Mormons are more judgemental than anyone else.

I know very little about LDS culture despite having grown up in Utah, but I will say that the LDS friends from college who had come from other states had a very different perspective on their religion than a lot of people I knew in high school.

Not saying that all Utah Mormons are like militant freaks or anything, just an observation.

Sadly, this is simply how the human mind operates. The research on infant-psychology shows that almost immediately after birth babies start forming conceptual categories and defining things in their environment by these categories. Everything from the shape of peoples' faces to the language sounds they hear gets generalized into broad categories. As humans age the categories get more refined in many cases (such as with human language) and less refined in a few others. This continues throughout a person's lifetime. It is simply the mind's mechanism for dealing with the world.

The key is to be cognizant of the fact that first perceptions are very often, but not always, acurate and to be flexible in your behaviors accordingly. It is unclear whether humans can conciously change their perceptions, but they can, in great measure, dictate their actions. So, while it might be likely that someone you meet fits into some generalized category you have, they may not, or they may give you reason to expand or refine your definition of that category so you should always give them the benefit of the doubt when dealing with them.

Wow, we have come a long way from SoccerPrime's original job request. Now I feel like we are doing a lecture from my "Language, Mind, and the World" class.

Maybe its just me, but its funny that in all this talk about the "Utah Mormons", the only person that has offered any kind of definition is the only person that is an active LDS and lives in the UC.

I find that, ironic.

As for this thread, I have found this off-topic thread appropriate in this off-topic forum.
So, does anyone else want to offer me a high paying job or give me a free house any where in SL, Utah or Davis counties (I might even go so far as Toole, Weber or Washington counties)?

You mean my definition? But I only live in Provo 2 months a year. And montgjules lives in Utah County too.

As a past communications major, I think you and I can speak the same language here. You understood me correctly and I think I understand you correctly. My only thing to add is that people can learn to develop more complex and more detailed ways of categorizing and evaluating the information they take in cognitively.

kinda funny, but i worked with GIS in high school a lot (my senior year) working on a wetlands project. we used it to map out the wetlands and do some other things. you should enquire with draper city about that. i know they were doing a lot with it when i was in high school 3 years ago. just my 2 cents. good luck with the move, its a pain in the ass thats for sure. i live in portland 9 months out of the year and come home in the summer to work for a doctor. traveling back in forth sucks a lot. flying is too short, a little over an hour, driving is too long and incredibly boring, like almost 14 hours. all in the name of education and work haha.
