No--footy is perfectly legal. 😉

Footy applies to a bunch of games (rugby, aussie rules) so it's a good generic term.

See--there's always and exception to every rule.

I absolutly hate it when people pretend to know about soccer and they don't... but it annoys me more when people say I don't know enough about soccer to try and talk about it. I really admire people who give their take on soccer (in soccer terms) and then listen when others talk. I would venture a guess that there are very few people here who would consider themselves a soccer expert... and well all learn from each other.
