The Vent Thread is here!

OK, so not just any venting.

I want to know what kind of common soccer terminology mangling gets you wound up.

I apologize in advance to anyone who thinks a finger is being pointed at them. This is about venting, remember, and we all had to learn this stuff sometime.

I'll start.

1. Name that league. I can't stand it when people who should know better (can you hear me Celo Balboa?) say The MLS instead of MLS. C'mon! Major modifies League and League modifies Soccer in this case. Nobody says The Soccer to describe the game. Drop the definite article and embrace proper grammar.

2. Netminders. He's a goalkeeper, or even a 'keeper. Not a goalie. That would be Patrick Roy.

3. Second last defender. It's offside, not offsides. Remember, you can only be on one side (team) at a time. Think about it.

4. Britishisms. Save me from the faux Brit stuff like pitch, manager, and boots--except in jest or to mock. I'll allow for kit since it's ubiquitous now, but it's really a uniform.

That should get it going.

Have at it!

I played soccer from the time I was four in 1979 until I hit 16 years of age in 1990. We called them Goalies. I don't mind it at all. I guess if you want to be pretentious you could call them goalkeepers or netminders or...crap I don't know...Guardians of the Skein. For me, Goalie is just fine.

I like it when people use terms I'm familiar with instead of one's that are in wide use in England but not here. We also called Defenders - Fullbacks, Midfielders - Halfbacks, and Strikers - Forwards. They're all good for me.

I do hate pitch. Although it made for an interesting combo when you think of the two films titled "Fever Pitch" one about baseball and one about soccer.

I hate people who tap the top of their soda can when they drop out of the vending machines.

you know that tap-tap-tap-tap- that goes on for minutes before they crack it open. like its really settling all this fizz thats just gonna slurt out all over your beautiful new prom dress or some junk.

you think after all these years of vending machine's being a staple in the american society (and a VERY big staple in Japan!) that they havn't perfected, to the best of our modern day knowledge, the perfect fizz-less drop.

yea, my vent. just realized this REALLY bugs me the other day at work. so I thought i'd let off some steam

Okay, I'm down with that. I thought that I was perceived as being not "in-the-know" if i didn't use terms like pitch and match. So I'm okay saying field and game?

I'm so much older than you it isn't even funny.

If you think it's pretentious, that's fine. This is a vent thread.

But I stand by my vent. Goalie sounds like hockey.

At least we agree on the pitch thing.

Well, I'll be the first to admit that I know NOTHING near what you all do about soccer. So, I don't have a 'soccer' vent yet.

I do, however, have a vent about people that pick their noses while driving. HOW GROSS IS THAT?!?! It's not like we can't SEE you through your window digging for a winner....NASTAY!!! 🤢

Gosh, I hope so! I'm guilty of ALL of Rover's annoyances. I guess we'd better not meet, he might try to strangle me! :D

That just happens to be the best place to pick it! What are we supposed to do? Blow our noses!?!? If you can clear your nose by blowing it into tissue, you've got wussy buggers!! Nothing like a good pick or farmers blow.

Yes, please. That's what we call them here in the colonies, and there's no reason to change.

For the record, I don't have a beef with anyone who grew up using the Brit terms. I lived in London as a kid and am very familiar with them. I'm talking about anyone who adopts them to sound more soccer smart.

Of course, venting has its limits. If someone buys their ticket and cheers for RSL they can use whatever terms they want.
