So, it wouldn't necessarily make sense to move a stadium 25 minutes closer to U.C. and 25 minutes further from D.C.

South of Salt Lake County they kind of do their own thing.

I hate to do this, but what are you basing this on? Because it doesn't sound right at all to me. My neighbors are always spending their Saturdays hitting shops and stores in Sandy, and further North as well. And keep in mind I'm all the way down in Springville. Do you have stats or a link to some stats or something? If you're talking college football, then yeah, I'm sure SLC gets more visitors from their neighbors on the North than they do the South, but that's the only instance I can really think of. Sorry for the skepticism, although it would make an interesting research topic.

Also, since when is Sandy 25 minutes away from downtown SLC? Are you walking? 😉

Trust me, that's the exception.

Davis County relies HEAVILY on SLC for retail and entertainment.

Utah County has all their own services. People in Utah County see movies, buy clothes, and visit restaurants in their own area.

Davis County goes to SLC.

That's why Davis County has gotten so worked up over Legacy and even threatened to boycott SLC. It's because they know they are a money player and they have a vested interest in the city.

Provo is just too far away to committ large numbers of people.

Salt Lake will need to get all the following as allies to get the stadium: (and their response)

1) Davis County: "Support the Legacy Highway or else! and forget your proposal to tax commuters to Downtown"
2) Soccer Suburbs (Sandy, Kearns, Cottonwood,West Jordon etc.): "Show some family values, not Pub crawls and night life (read booze and sin) and throw in free parking."
3) Empty Nester: (aging out older neighborhoods). "No new taxes!!"
4) Salt Lake County Goverment: "Of course we could write a check for the full amount from our retained excess funds, but the Salt Palace Expansion is keeping us in debt and we really don't want ot own/opperate it anyway. Look what the Jazz did to us, they went and built a new state of the art arena and as part of the finacial package we had to sign a non-compete contract and tear down the Salt Palace Arena."
5) University of Utah and legislative alies: "It looks like Real will be a cash cow that we can milk for the benifit of RES and the football program so let's keep them here"
6) The TAX coalition of organiztions and certain legislators: "No taxes for it, no end runs around our control, give us a lot of income to control from your opperation (taxes) and let us get the credit for enableling it."
7) Venue opperators (for concerts etc) West Valley City's USANA and E-Center, the FairPark, Red Butte Gardens of the U of U, Sandy Ampitheater and the rest: "Don't cut into the dates we fight over with a stage etc. and don't mess with our tax/income status."
8) Developers: "Cut us in."
9) Soccer fans: "Get us a great and distinctive Stadium: the The Crown Jewel of the MLS; fast; with some fields, comfortable seats, plenty of parking and get the SL soccer park built."
10) Real Salt Lake's stadium budget: You should pay the extra 20 to 40 million dollars for the extra cost in land and parking structures."

CAN SALT LAKE CITY DELIVER???

I made an effort to talk to Rocky Anderson on the day they announced the team name. I voiced my concern about the stadium, but it seemed as though he kinda didn't care to bring the revenue to downtown.

I am going to call his office again. I will also voice opinion to other council members.

The FO will not be the last stop for our petition. You are right it needs to go further, but it would be nice to send it to them to see our support.

Why downtown? Is it the lack of parking you like? The run down vagrants you see? The lack of support from an arrogant city council and a worthless mayor who admits he hates soccer? Or maybe it's the best way to exclude soccer fans from across the Wasatch front? Maybe it's the traffic congestion that suits? Or possibly the extra $15 million it will cost downtown?

I would rather be somewhere that I am wanted, needed, welcomed, somewhere with more space, more inclusive, somewhere that costs less so that we can have a better stadium with more facilities, a mayor who wants it, a city who supports it and mostly something that Rocky 'I hate soccer' Anderson has nothing to do with and no say in. Maybe I'll start a petition to have it in ...

If Uncle Dave ends up funding it himself, he can cut half of these entities out of the equation, and then it's just up to us as fans to make sure he makes his money back. I think, however, that Real and Uncle Dave know what they're doing, and in reality, there are several competitors here that actually want the stadium. Competition is always a good thing!

Additionally, if the stadium is built within 5 minutes of a major freeway exit, it's not going to really matter if it's in Sandy or downtown as the time difference on the freeway between those two spots on a Saturday afternoon/evening will likely be around 10 minutes - max (I should know, I drive that route all the time). So, realistically, UC'ers and DC'ers shouldn't really complain either way. Any perception otherwise can/should be effectively handled with marketing.

Is Sandy's location (convention center) within 5 of a major exit? I honestly don't know.

But really 5 minutes. Not 5 minutes at 3am.

Yes. In fact, it's fairly central between the 90th South Exit and the 106th S. Exit. I think it's a great spot, personally. I believe the downtown locations - at least the ones near or around the Gateway are also similarly positioned. I work just south of the Gateway, so I wouldn't mind either location, personally.
