These are all good points. But I am an extreme optimist.

so I'm still watching for the Mathis we all want.

After all, he didn't score 5 in one match on accident.

He's there somewhere.

my boyfriend's back

Mathis is like a bad boyfriend. You love him, love him. But damned if he doesn't break your heart sometimes and make you cry. But you still support him and hope for the sweet guy to come out. (in soccer's case, the guy who scored 5 goals!) He's endearing and charming and you just want to see him do well. Rats, Clint! Behave, score some goals, and be the kind of soccer boyfriend I can talk to my dad about! 😇

No...he's not. That Clint was lost to too many knee injuries which robbed him of his speed and quick first step. The only Clint we can hope for is a true 2-way middie / D-mid who is willing to WORK for 90 minutes and be a 15 assists/yr player with a few goals on free kicks.

Until he accepts his limitations and decides to change his play, he will continue to be a liability on the field [and apparently off the field as well].

Against The Crew Mathis was in as a defensive mid but not impressively.

During the shot taking part of warmups I watching Clint and concentrated on his body mechcanics. He was blasting off strong shots (but they looked like "can you top this" show offs instead of game preparation). Looking at his support foot placement, it was all over the place! Either he is so great that he can make any kind of shot from any kind of body position, LAWS OF PHYSICS BE DAMMED!, or he has forgot that correct body position needs constant oversight and self correction or the willingness to be corrected. Besides its a bad example to young players.

You may be on to something there. It probably ties in with the "headcase" label that follows him too.
