I really like him and there have been times where he's truly shown some exceptional ability.

Agree. He's very skilled athletically, and I'd have a hard time thinking of anyone in MLS with a quicker reaction time. And he's still relatively young. I think he just needs to learn the little things about the position that will bump him up from the "decent GK" category to the "this keeper is a keeper" category.

I personally don't think that having Walker would have resulted in a significant decrease in the amount of goals allowed. Maybe a couple.

Here is the dilemma:
Countess has played on 3 MLS teams now (although Fire hardly count), and when he was there they all sucked.
Walker and Busch have been star GKers on good teams.

Perhaps Countess is the problem.

Bah! Sports are unfair! If they were being all touchy feely and fair and nice and coddling Pierce, Behnke and Whitfield would still be around.

Can DJ. Send him to CostaGuatMexrico or wherever. I don't care, just get rid of him. He's had plenty of experience in the league and still can't seem to go a single game without some sort of silly decision. Does the kid of talent? Ya, but being a pro is about much more than that.

The Crew have a glut GKs. We really should be able to get one and hopefully send DJ the other way.

Also, if Mathis is going to be back next year we need to trade Williams. Those 2 simply can't be in the midfield at the same time. It just doesn't work.

Before we ship out Williams (which I think is unlikely) who are we getting in return?
Simply trading Williams for a average defender isn't in RSL's best interest.

Some of RSL's best goals came from Williams (in the 2nd half of the season).

The Burn had more problems than DJ.

So we are faced with 2 possibilities:
Countess is extremely unlucky
or
Countess sucks

Gosh i think that we are being a bit harsh on the guy... Yes he let a bunch of goals in but you know as well as I do that a good number of those should have never made it as far as him... so until we have a back line that can support him I think we should reserve judgement!

my $0.02

However I must admit that I felt much more confidence in Nolly... FWIW

DJ is still really young for a goalkeeper. I'd guess the GK's best years are in their 30's because they are still good athletically and they have lots of experience. (Kasey Keller comes to mind)

Using hindsight, I'm wondering why RSL didn't get a veteran GK before the season? (I know one of their GKs got hurt...maybe he was a veteran?) Or maybe they thought they had one in DJ?

But I will say this: I wouldn't mind at all if DJ is the starter next year with an improved defense in front of him. Of course, what I'd REALLY like to see is Kasey Keller starting for RSL, with an improved backline, and keeping DJ as a back-up (which he probably would not be happy about.)

With the WC in Germany next year and the fact that Keller single-handedly is saving Borussia from relegation, I seriously doubt RSL will even get a chance to snag Keller.
As much as we might dream/fantasize/really,really,really want him to come to Utah.

As for the rest of the GK position, I too think having a seasoned vet with some winning experience can only help. Because both Nolly and Countess have had losing pro soccer careers so far.

ESPN says Borussia is in 5th place in the Bundesliga after only 10 matches played...nowhere near being relegated. 😕
