I also e-mailed him:
"Thanks for the article. I can tell you are not convinced, but at least you seem to have an open mind. I would like to make a clarification re your comment that only one MLS team has had a profitable year. Because of the single entity concept, all of the teams are responsible for their % of the losses of the others. The Galaxy was profitable in 2003 AFTER paying their % of league-wide losses. It is generally understood that Columbus, the other team with a soccer specific stadium, regularly breaks even or makes a profit, but not enough to offset the league-wide losses. There is a reason that Chivas, America (of Mexico), and Checketts are interested in MLS now, as opposed to a few years ago. The Home Depot (where the Galaxy plays) and Crew Stadium have show them that soccer can be profitable in the US. In fact, the Home Depot took the Galaxy from losing 4-5 million a year, to your mentioned profitability. Dallas and Chicago are both expected to be profitable with their new stadiums...even after their % of league losses. Here's the inside news...the MLS is really just ONE stadium away from being a profitable entity. That is the situation in New York / Jersey. Right now the Metrostars lose somewhere between 6-7 million a year. They are on record as saying, if their proposed stadium in Harrison NJ can be built, they will break even the first year, and have admitted on the record that is a swing of 6-7 million. Once that happens, well, you can do the math regarding league-wide losses. Again, thank you for the article." | |||||
