'05: Utah's biggest stories of the year
http://www.sltrib.com/search/ci_3352086

Sports
The good news: Utah lands its second major-league sports franchise (Real Salt Lake) and a soccer superstar (Clint Mathis) to lead the team.
The bad news: Mathis and RSL struggle to score en route to the league's second-worst record.
The really bad news: Mathis is gone and, for stadium-seeking Salt Lake City, so is RSL - to Sandy.

Mathis leaving and RSL deciding to put the stadium in Sandy is Really Bad News???

I would place that in the Great News category.
😕

I'm going to have to concur with the Mathis part being bad news. 🙁 But I'll disagree with their assessment of Sandy... I think Sandy is fantastic.

I have to disagree with a little bit of each piece of bad news. The bad news about Mathis is not his lack of goal production, nor the fact that he's gone, but simply what a huge disappointment his whole stay in Salt Lake was. It's not as though scoring goals was his only job, and it's also not true that he was a completely ineffectual soccer player. What he was, however, was extremely inconsistent on the field, and a cancer around the rest of the team. What a shame.

And as for the cheap shot at Sandy... I agree with montgjules on Sandy being "fantastic" - I think it's a great fit. I'm wondering for just whom the Trib considers the RSL move to Sandy as "really, really bad news." For fans who'll get a world class stadium and adjoining facilities for a much cheaper price than could be had on a smaller parcel of land downtown? Frankly, I don't think Sandy's so far away that SLC has lost anything, clout or otherwise. If they're worried about what to tell prospective CEO's or whoever, just omit the minor detail that the team plays outside of the city limits. Most people from larger cities likely wouldn't notice anyway. Seems SLC's still got a pro soccer team, they just didn't have to pay for its stadium - and that smells like good news for SLC to me.

No matter what the numbers look like, there will always be a very sizeable portion of SLC (and the press) that views the Sandy stadium as bad news.

This has little to do with RSL

And a lot to do with SLC's political struggles at the county and state level

as well as demographic trends that have isolated SLC politically and begun to isolate SLC economically.

It doesn't help that suburban politicians openly relish thier opportunities to make life difficult for the capitol city and acknowledge going far out of their way to do so.

So the "world class stadium" thing doesn't go far with people.

Besides, until "Larryland" is ripped out by its foundations, nothing in the area will ever be "world class". I think the trailer parks in the neighborhood are classier than that stink hole.

Damn you Rocky for not learning how to play golf!

The problem isn't that Rocky doesn't play golf...

The problem is, that while playing golf, Rocky has good and bad points. On the bad side he:

- talks when he should stay quiet
- points out all of the shortcomings of his playing partners,
- god forbid if you have an emanation of any type into his clean air breathing space, and
- as you would guess, he's quite the trash-talker.

On the good side, he likes the electric golf carts and picks up his trash.

Some find these golf mannerisms to be a refreshing breath of fresh air...most find it annoying.

The problem is his penchant for being a world-class a$$hole 24/7.
