Eh. If we park one of our cars in the garage, the driveway could probably hold another 2 cars. 🙂

I suppose Sandy has plans to implement street parking restrictions around the stadium?

Probably. They already do for the Expo Center which is Kitty-Corner from the stadium site.

The newspaper articles showed the old farm site, which last summer was in Alfalfa. Question: could there be a practice field be put in during construction? Question 2: why not inagurate it with a Loyalist/RCB soccer "game" before the contruction fences go up?

Any word on the ground breaking?
I like the idea of assimilation. All the businesses that currently operate on that stretch of State Street would be better served by upgraded facilities and being part of a larger retail/commercial complex. I remember reading about some business owners who plan to be stubborn and hold out, but that's just dumb to me.

Can't wait to see the ground break. Of course they "broke ground" on the 9400 South TRAX station about a month ago, but that's all that's happened with that project. All of this stuff just goes so much slower than I'd like. 🙂

I believe the property owners will tell the leasers (local businesses) the follwing: "Well, the stadium's going up. This neighborhood will see a lot more foot traffic. If you want to stay in this building it's going to cost you $X more per month." I would suspect that almost all will be forced out at which point the propety owners will either sell to RSL or upgrade and charge even more to new leasees. Either way, I don't expect anything on that block to remain the same. For the few local businesses that own the land they are on, I couldn't tell you what to expect.

What, do you really think they care about the neighborhood around the stadium?

Residents don't pay enough taxes. Plus, they won't vote Republicans out of office anyway.

=====================================
The Minnesota Wild play in the Xcel Center in St. Paul which holds a hair over 18,000 for NHL games. Note the ticket prices. I would assume part of the reason for RSL building a stadium the size they're looking to is because it's not just about how many butts you get in the seats but what kind of $$ you get them to pay for that ticket.

New RSL stadium news

A new RSL poster on BS, RSL Fortaleza Menina (who I don't think posts here) has posted the update on the "Tourist Tax for RSL Stadium" bill, which was approved yesterday.

Here is the post:

UPDATE!!!: Excellent, intense debate. Good show...

Speaking in favor of HB371:
County-level Hotel & Convention Industry Rep (& Provo Marriott)
Counties (esp. Washington, Davis, & Utah) need public investment in convention center expansions to remain competitive in market.
Speaking in opposition to HB371:
Jim McNeil (United Concerts founder & U of U grad)
Is opposed to public $$ because he had to get private loans for WVC ampatheater. A pro soccer stadium won't bring any new concerts to Utah--will take business from existing businesses like mine. Not fair.
Steve Lundgren (SLMarriott), representing SL & Ogden lodging industries (Grand America, Hiltons, Red Lion, etc.)
This legislation not in good faith, bad precedence to eliminate sunset clause, Soccer stadium not good use of funds. Last year wanted TRT to expand Salt Palace—was turned down (sour grapes?)
Clint Ensign (Sinclair Group--owner of Grand & Little America Hotels)
Opposed to Soccer Stadium being lumped together with tourism. The Salt Palace carpet is 18 years old, but not enough funds to replace it.
General Debate:
Rep Adams:
Have hotels & restaurants benefited from Jazz & other sports teams over last 30 years? Yes. Trax was extended to door of Delta Center for that very reason.

Rep Clark:
Counties wont' be forced to adopt/extend this tax. The option is up to them. State Leg is not dictating to the counties. Many hotels associations are IN FAVOR of this. SLC associations aren't b/c SL already has TRT. SL shouldn’t prohibit other counties from same funding mechanism.

SL County Council member (unknown):
If the market supports this, the TRT might make sense (but soccer does not). This is not be a bad tax per se. I think 90% of the revenue generated by a soccer stadium will come from already in-state money. Magna should not have to subsidize Sandy. This is not free money, and there are many other worthy needs, such as schools.

Rep Hansen:
I'm worried that there's no accountability for tax hikes. We have a state surplus this year, so how can I vote for any kind of tax increase? I can't.

Rep Morely:
Proposed an amendment that would prohibit gov’t entities from competing with private capital when building new facilities. Amendment failed.

Rep Dunnigan:
There are really 2 issues here: 1) Should we repeal sunset clause? 2) Should we allow smaller counties to use TRTs? Proposed amendment to allow a vote on smaller counties' TRT, but NOT on the repeal of sunset clause. Amendment failed.
The committee then voted on HB371 (to pass on the full House with a favorable recommendation).
HB371 passed 9 Yes, 3 No:
Yes:
Rep. J. Stuart Adams
Rep. Jackie Biskupski
Rep. David Clark
Rep. Carl W. Duckworth
Rep. Craig A. Frank
Rep. Todd E. Kiser
Rep. Curtis Oda
Rep. Gordon E. Snow
Rep. Scott L Wyatt
No:
Rep. Neil A. Hansen
Rep. Michael T. Morley
Rep. James A. Dunnigan

So, what's the bottom line for people like me that need politic-speak translated?
