It's one thing for journalists/gashoggingcouncilmembers to speak out against public financing for the stadium, but quite another to spout off "facts" which, as we know, are wholly unsubstantiated.

Unfortunately, most of these news reports are relying on these "fact-based" quotes from people who wouldn't know a corner kick from a donkey kick to the head, which is where I take issue with these people.

Small off set to this article, but I was pleased.

I finally saw the item. It was well said. No ranting, no villifying, just pointing out the lack of groundwork, and some facts that that should make a difference. Very well put, indeed.

I thought I could count on them to take the high road seeing as soccer is seen as an alternative sport and they are an alternative station but they didn't, all they did was poke fun at the Real name.

So first thing I did this morning at work was to email them and let them know they saddened a long time listener.

I am beginning to think that the current chic or in-thing to do is bash soccer!
Granted there are a ton of people out there that just don't know they love soccer... YET!

My son even tho he is now a season ticket holder thinks it is dead clever to make fun of the name... because all of his friends do!

I may have to wait til he goes to a few games... becomes a huge fan... then sell his season ticket! (oooooh that would be way tooooooo evil! I am surprized that such a thought even entered my mind! :D )

But seriously... which one was it? Bill, Gina or Kerry?

I used to like Bill... he used to harbor the same angst I do... but we have somehow diverged...
He is getting soft or I am toooo angst ridden... but I feel he would rather complain about the pizza guy wanting to see his license when he writes a check instead of taking on real issues... Like Doug Robinson's ineptitude!

I am disappointed that they were not supportive... we are going to have to keep an eye on the 'Joke Factor'... Jokes tend to be more effective at forming public opinion than most columnists or politicians!

If it is a joke... then people won't take it seriously... John Kerry is a recent example!

I heard the x-96 deal, too. They just bashed soccer and the name to fit in and be cool. I wouldn't count on them taking the "high road" all that often. Bad for ratings 😉 They're probably right about the lack of support for funding, though.

They actually read a good part of the article on the air.

Bill: "The new Real Salt Lake soccer team has a potentially huge obstacle..."
Kerry: "Yeah. Nobody cares!"
All: "Hahahahahaha"

I guess it will never get old.

Soccer bashing is not new, trust me. Dig into the history of the game in the
USA and you find that when football displaced soccer in the Ivy League in the late 19th Century, the pattern of bashing was set. They said the same stuff then that they say now--boring game, no scoring, players not tough, etc. Utah soccer bashers just have new threat on which to focus--RSL.

Two points on this. First, they wouldn't bash if they weren't threatened by soccer. Like a century ago, there's a big dose of insecurity about a game they don't understand. It wouldn't be an issue if soccer wasn't growing in popularity. It is, and they don't know how to handle it, so they go negative.

Second, my advice is to ignore it. Soccer bashers are usually beyond reasonable discussion. I tell the kids I coach that regardless of provocation there's only one approved method of responding to trash talk and dirty play, and that's to score goals. Same with this. Don't jump into the pig pen with the pigs--they love it and you end up covered in mud. The best response is to succeed, and that means filling stadiums and enjoying the game. And we plan on doing that anyway.

Another call to arms:
http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,600108629,00.html?
The author points out that RSL is leading in season ticket sales and then off-hands it by saying thats no big surprise since they are a new team.
Ugh. Do these guys ever research?

Maybe RSL should start looking at Utah or Davis Counties? 🙁

Actually, he said they are leading in NEW season ticket sales (which really isn't too much of a surprise), then says that we're around the league average in total season ticket sales (thought we were 2nd), which SHOULD come as somewhat of a surprise, given that RSL doesn't have 10 years of history and 10 years of fan base.
