Ice cream abuse is a serious problem in our society. How can you belittle it thus, comparing it to the nigh harmless issues presented by alcohol abuse?! Moreover, ice cream consumption, on a reasonable and rational level, is perfectly healthy, and even therapeutic for some. It's too bad the lactose intolerant can never understand this...

Catch the debate over on BS (stadium thread 3) and see if you still think that it is a good idea.

BS is right...that's most of what you'll ever find there. Intolerant people trying to force their views down other people's throats and ready and willing to take offense where none was intended. People with no patience, no interest in taking a second to actually consider something provocative and "offensive" to them as possibly having merit. People that quote you out of context to make you look bad. People not willing to treat you as an imperfect, yet valuable human being. Unless you agree with them. At least on the alcohol issue.

Bitter? Me? No... 😉

This forum is 100X better than BS.

This isn't set in stone. Checketts is only thinking about it, and many good points for and against have been made over on the BS forum (it's actually a decent debate, when it doesn't get down to religious/personal attacks). Checketts has said (I believe) that he didn't like some of the things that people did in his facilities in NYC while under the influence of alcohol, and that may be the main reason he is considering an alcohol-free stadium.

As you say, the key issue here is alcohol abuse, not responsible and limited alcohol consumption. I personally believe that alcohol should be allowed, but somehow limited, if possible. As it stands, people already smuggle alcohol into Rice Eccles, so if they can't get a weak-sauce 3.2% beer at the new stadium, they'll just smuggle in their own juice, and it will probably be stronger than 3.2%.

This whole "Give me beer, or give me death!" crowd is really interesting to me. For me, soccer is soccer, and I just love going to the games because it's soccer. For others, they want their beer in order to enjoy the game to its "fullest." That's great, just so long as they don't impact my experience in a constitutionally unprotected negative way, I'm totally fine with that. Vice is a part of life. My main vices are soccer and legos. And ain't NO ONE takin' away my LEGOS!

So, let me just make sure that I'm understanding you here, are you saying you don't like Big Soccer? 😁

I don't usually visit BS.....now I know why. I just wasted 30 minutes of my morning. I've come to the conclusion that I just don't care that much.

Collectively, no, I don't like it. I'm glad you caught that 😉 There are some very intelligent people that post there (RSL Fortaleza Menina is a good example), people with even keels and no axes to grind outside of the ReAL axe and the soccer axe in general. Then there's people like me, who get all offended with people that take offense. Then there's others that just use it as a hate forum to hate on all the people that don't agree with their perfect vision of the world and their infallible logic concerning what's right for the team, the sport, and everyone else at the same time. It's all very complicated and sad, and even through all that, I have hope for BigSoccer.

But on this dry/wet issue, I personally think the answer is right there in the moderate middle: limited drinking, with the purpose of preventing as much abuse as possible.

Anyone saying, "If there's no beer, I ain't goin" and also those saying "If beer is offered, I ain't goin" are being kind of silly, IMO, which tends to not be humble sometimes 😉 and this is coming from a guy who gets his all of his alcohol intake from nyquil...Fortunately, I doubt many true fans are feeling either of these two ways. They realize that soccer comes first, then "to drink or not to drink".

Bottom line: we all support Real Salt Lake, liquored up or not. That is our common bond, and I think we should focus more on that that on certain other things, like beer and religion.

I honestly hope not to offend anyone with this question, but I just can't seem to come up with a logical answer:

"What's the big deal with beer?"

I appreciate the fact that people may enjoy beer. I enjoy eating and drinking stuff, too. In fact, since heretic brought it up, I'm a big fan of the fattening foods. Not so much ice cream per se, but man...a good cheeseburger...Oh yeah! If RES or Sandy suddenly stopped selling cheeseburgers, I don't think I'd give it a second thought, though. In fact, I would go as far as to say I wouldn't care. As much as I love cheeseburgers, I find that on occasion I am able to go for 2 hours without one.

Beer seems to be different, however. The presence of beer (or the lack thereof) seems to arouse emotions unlike those produced by any other sort of food or beverage. I know that people routinely go for more than 2 hours without a beer, so I can probably safely rule out the physical "need" for beer. I can only surmise that it must, therefore, be about the "experience". From my observations, however, the only time that I noticed that beer had an effect on a fan's experience was when he was thrown out of the stadium for being drunk (by the way, I have yet to see anyone get thrown out for being a little tipsy from having consumed too much ice cream. Or cheeseburgers. Mmmm.) Obviously this is the exception. Most people seem to be able to handle themselves and behave.

Seriously, I would like opinions on why beer is important. Why are some going as far as to say that they won't go to the matches if there is no beer? I'm not looking to ridicule or flame or anything. I'm curious as to why this is such a hot topic and a point of concern (financial issues aside).

Hey, I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I do catch things sometimes. 😉
