I was of the understanding that Bramble successfully blocked RDA money so it could not be used and that is why they went for the hotel tax.

Besides that... why is it turning stomachs?
It was ok for it to be used for DC and FCF and the E-Center... so why is it suddenly so difficult to stomach?

Last year, Bramble's RDA reform bill (among other things) blocked RDA from being used on sports projects.

This year, new legislation was passed that repealed just the sports section of the RDA reform so Sandy could use RDA in the stadium project.

Then good for them... They now have another avenue to fund the stadium.

If it was good enuff for the Delta Center, Franklin Covey, E-Center, Micron and Thanksgiving point than it is good enough for Soccer City...
My stomach feels fine!

Great Job Utah Legislature! My hats off to you!

The new legislation allows for 3 different types of RDA funding. The type RSL would like to use for a portion (8 or 9 million) of the funding requires that the local school district sign off on allowing their portion of the property taxes to be diverted for a certain period of time. This is to placate the "you are stealing tax dollars from our children" crowd. The rest of the funding for the infrastructure of the stadium (and if you have been to 94th and State, you recognize the need for mucho infrastructure) will be from bonds backed by the County.

That's exactly what's happening. I thought you were convinced everyone is out to screw RSL.

RSL is getting roughly the same deal LHM did on Delta Center. That is to say, the percentage of public funding will be about the same.

RSL at first wanted more, and even approached SLC for full funding, but many felt it wouldn't be fair to the Spazz.

Isn't that the same money source denied to RSL by Curt Bramble & the state legislature?

Why was it ok for them to, not only use public funding but, to use RDA money for three sports arenas (Delta Center, Franklin Covey and E-Center) and then take it away for another sports arena?
I mean the E-Center is soooo successful they can't even find a corporate sponsor to buy a name for it!

I think it's a bit misleading to say that Bramble's RDA bill was to block the RSL stadium. That may have been part of if it but a year ago when I was driving up to the spiral jetty (woo-hoo!), I caught a public radio show where they talked about the RDA issue. It's been awhile but I don't remember them even bringing the stadium up in the discussion. They may have. But the bulk of the concern seemed to be that you have cities, lets say Cottonwood Heights and Murray, that will go out and use RDA money to lure retail development. It can help the city itself a bit (there is some question if necessarily pays off though) but it's really a zero sum game for the metro as a whole. It's not like getting Micron to reopen it's plant in Lehi when they could use a mothballed chip plant west of Boise. That retail is going to into that area, it's just a matter of exactly where and exactly which stores.

It wouldn't suprise me if Bramble took advantage of that problem to get that RDA change through to ensure future Larry Miller campaign contributions. I just wanted to throw that out there since sometimes it feels like people are forgetting the complexity of these things.

that is all well and good but to me the extent of the complexity is that I want RSL to have a stadium.
And in light of all of the other public/private ventures that have gone down in the past, I think RSL should be able to utilize the same funding that other prominent business men in the valley have used to their advantage.

It is not my job to give a damn whether they use money from RDA or a hotel tax... That is somebody else's job to worry about. All this posturing, grandstanding and chest beating just smacks of prepubescent favoritism to me... The larry man is the favorite and Dave is the red headed one!
i really could care less how it gets done... Just that it gets done...
That is pretty simple really.

It's true the stadium is important.

But just as important is the way it is accomplished.

Nah. If you are superficial like I am, all you care about is the result.
