Stupid answer: "Two. Nobody said it had to be a matching pair."

p.s. Arelius, I found the website you're using... Keep it up! I took a bunch of IQ tests a couple months ago because I enjoyed the mental puzzles so much.

Unless you pull three of the same color out. Using your logic, you'd have to pull out eleven to guarantee a pair of socks the same color.

But this didn't ask for a matching pair of socks, did it? So color doesn't really matter. Two is the correct answer.

If you pulled out 10 of the same color, you'd have five matching pairs.... So if you're looking for a matching pair of two that are the same color (and you're not looking, and you're not blind)... then the answer is 3. Two that are unmatching: two. Etc. There's always another way to look at things...

You're right. I got so caught up in the idea that they don't have to match I figured it to guarantee a non-matching pair. You'd need to pull 11 to guarantee a non-matching pair, not a matching pair. My bad.

When I started typing my response I had done the same thing, it was only as I typed it out that I realized it.

But of course, the answer is 2, they didn't say matching pair.

And yes, the 1964/1984 answer is very lame

I was prejudiced on the sock question because I was assuming it was the same as a question I discussed before with somebody. I didn't read it carefully enough to realize there was the loophole. 🙂

An encyclopedia consists of ten volumes (sitting next to each other, in order, on a shelf). Each volume contains one thousand pages. Excluding the covers of each volume, how many pages are between the first page of the encyclopedia and the last?
Eight thousand. When books sit on shelves, the first page of the book is the rightmost page, and the last page is the leftmost page. So you can't count the pages in the first and last volumes.
