But I'm still intrigued by a comment made my Dean Howes just before they went with Sandy. He said there was a piece of property just west of the Gateway where the new commuter rail train station is going to be built. He said there was a piece of property there with a land owner ready to sell.

I would think land west of the Gateway is still cheap compared to Downtown itself.
Oh didn't know this. Interesting. Do you happen to have a link to the story? I would like to read it. Thanks

A couple clarifications re Block 22...

1) It is not the one with the parking lot next to the courthouses...
2) The price tripled because Mark Miller Toyota was only willing to be bought out if the dealership (and it's used car lot across the street) were both relocated.
3) Even then, the deal was not dead until the RDA stay.

To date, no-one is sure (including members of the Salt Lake City counsel) why RSL and Rocky did not pursue the land west of the Gateway more vigorously. Rumor was that the owners were not willing to sell...but no-one is sure.

The anger at Holding is misplaced unless you are mad at him for refusing to sell the courthouse block. He was wiling and able to sell the portions of Block 22 he owned.

The SL Trib link doesn't work anymore. But here is a link to the thread where this was discussed .

I might be reading too much into this, but there was also this in yesterday's DesNews:
Quote:
Bovee said discussions with Salt Lake City and Real Salt Lake have convinced him this issue will die within a few years when new soccer stadiums are built that will be ideal for these high school tournaments. Until then, the soccer "pioneers" will continue to make do, and hopefully realize those making the decisions do the best they can for all the student athletes involved.

Is Rocky working on resurrecting the Youth Soccer Complex idea somewhere within SLC? Damn I hope so. Because even though I like the Grand Real Stadium downtown idea, I like Soccer City even more (and it makes more sense if you're trying to win hearts & minds). West side, anyone? Or somewhere along the border of eastside/westside? Someplace we can bridge both the metaphorical and the physical divide in SL with soccer?

I don't know. Maybe it's frustration over the deal seeming to fall apart and in general feeling RSL could've handled it better. I don't know why the legislature passed the buck to the county but if a folks on the county board didn't make this an issue, I'd be willing to be it wouldn't have been much of one. What county voters are going to be upset over an extra buck on a hotel bill, afterall? Semms like RSL could've better set the parameters of the debate. That is, that it's a very small tax that will not impact most people in the county. More so, that they're asking for less than the Jazz asked when the Jazz were in a very precarious financial position.

I don't think RSL needs to beg for forgiveness. In hindsight I do wish they had done a better job of setting the parameters of the debate before the opponents did.

I think it's the same reason why we don't blam the refs or MLS for our poor performance on the field.

We blame the refs for a few minutes, but then we have to look at ourselves.

I still ticked off at the trib. I don't care that they don't agree with things but yesterday's article by Jensen was the "final straw" for me. The a-hole went out of his way to find a measurement of attendance + cherry picked some other issues to help insinuate there could be financial trouble with team. God forbid he acknlowedges that while season ticket sales give more stability / less risk for sales, they're also much discounted over regular tickets. So if season tickets sales are less than projected (but still being sold!) but butts in the seats are just as high if not higher, then revenues could be higher than projected. There's a load of other complexities like that in the picture. I don't expect the news to cover them in detail but if they're being objective, they should hint that they're there. Instead we're left with an article that uses numbers whenever it comes to backing up "the team is in trouble" and uses we can't comment stuff for the argument against the team being in trouble. That's "objectivity" that P.R. firms admire but not what journalists in america should be doing.

It's hard for the team to overcome that. It's not about how a ref is callign the game. It's like the league said RSL can only have 8 men versus 11 on the pitch for the stadium fight.

I think it is, but is it possible?

What would Checketts have to do to make it possible?

He has said that they have already privately raised millions for the Sandy site, why not take that money and build a more scaled back stadium Downtown?

I think the team would win back the hardcore fans that rebelled at the idea of the Sandy stadium and perhaps get the general population off their back and maybe on their side now.

Please Dave, build the stadium where should have always been.

I think this is a great idea! I will even contribute. LMAO

I was just driving into to work listening to KSL and they said Caroon has killed the Sandy stadium deal.

I just looked on KSL's website but I don't see anything on there yet.

Did anyone else hear the same?

the Rogue one just heard the same thing on 1280. Caroon's a soccer fan who owns season tix as well.
