Dave Checketts pronounces it Ree-al while the first word from the team was Ray-al... 😕 I think it is just office politics! No one wants to correct the boss, so the way the boss says it is adopted and becomes the rule rather than the exception! I pronounce it Ray-al as well should anyone that does not work at the RSL FO. :D

OK, so SL Trib, DN and most other media outlets have it wrong then? I say this because the "ree-al" comment I posted earlier is quoted from SL Trib, who have used that pronouncation several times in their various RSL articles.

I am going from a few sources which pronounce it Ray-AL... 1) Real Madrid... 2) Deseret News back in October after the name announcement "Major League Soccer was introduced to Salt Lake Saturday. The team will, according to owner Dave Checketts, be forever known as Real Salt Lake. That's not Real as in "reel." It's "RAY-al," which is Spanish for either "royal" or "Your fly is open." My Spanish isn't that good." 3) October Article from the Salt Lake Tribune"Dave Checketts announced the name of his Major League Soccer team on Saturday - Real Salt Lake. Named after Real (pronounced Ray-al and meaning "royal" in Spanish) Madrid, " I was looking for an official pronunciation at RSL's website but it looks like it either never officially gave it's pronunciation or it has been "Big Brothered" out! :D As you can see there was initially a push by the local papers to have it pronounced Ray-AL but now for some unknown reason it is pronounced in ads and print as Ree-AL! Maybe it is just to stimulate debate... if so it is suceeding! 🙄

I prefer to call it "Ray-AL" rather than "Ree-AL" simply because of the Human habit of lazy pronunciation, it is inevitable that Ree-Al will become, over a short period of time, Reel or Ree-ool bringing us full circle to the incorrect (in this instance) American pronunciation of the word...
However, using this theory, Ray-al will be inevitably shortened by lazy pronunciation to 'Rail' and therefore will save some embarrassing moments... Last edited by Deuce : 12-29-2004 at 10:32 AM.

😉 I will simply remind you that most of our fans will be Gringos with Gringo mouths. It looks like REEL, and many will be inclined to say it that way. That being the case, consider it a win if you hear two syllables, whatever they sound like.😉
