Any way we can endorse this if we wish and encourage the DN to print it?

I am befuddled!

Deuce, last time I saw this argument many moons ago I checked the state of Utah's tourist web site. They were promoting the sports teams to the tourists. So either the state has it wrong or the editorial is wrong.

This isn't exactly a scientific economic analysis.

But I live near the NAC Plant in West Valley City. At best, the parking lot is at most half full.

Maybe they are going to move some jobs there in the future. Or maybe they have a lot of employees that work the Graveyard shift. (But I have driven by there a few times in the middle of the night during diaper and/or formula runs)

Instead of complaining about setting a precedent for the Salt Lake Marlins, I should be complaining about the Des News & the Trib.

My Response

I would like to start by stating that your editorial regarding Real Salt Lake’s proposed stadium is a beautiful piece of writing. However, it has fundamental flaws in its fairness in addressing the issue at hand.

How is it that when the parent company of The Deseret News seeks $10 million to build and move its printing facilities across the valley no public vote is called for? Yet, you call for a vote when it doesn’t directly benefit your owners and operators. So does this make The Deseret News the pot or the kettle?

Also, the Utah Travel Council uses the professional sports teams in Utah as marketing tools to promote tourism in the state. Is not Real Salt Lake one of these teams that is being used to draw tourists to the state? You would be hard pressed to refute the multi-million dollar impact of last summers World Cup Qualifying game Real Salt Lake brought to Salt Lake County. You will see a similar economic impact this summer when Real Madrid comes to town. Sandy is still in Salt Lake County last time I checked and would continue to bring similar events and millions of dollars in tourist money to the county and state. Is this not the tourism that you claim will not be rightfully served if a stadium uses public funding?

And we won’t even bring up how the E-Center or Franklin Covey Field were funded. And please don’t forget Dave Checketts is only asking for a similar deal to what Utah’s favorite sports/car mogul Larry Miller got when he built The Delta Center.

All I am asking for is fair, unbiased reporting of the facts as they are. Be it an editorial or an article, there are certain journalistic principles that the Deseret News continually fails at in the reporting of this issue.

Nope, and it was never meant to be. I'm dealing in round and rough figures to show what I think about the economic potential that RSL may have. I could be WAY off. I don't think so, however. I am always open to debate.

Oops!

When I said that "this isn't scientific analysis"; I was referring to my trips by the NAC building leading to the conclusion that spending tax money there was a bad idea.

Oops!

I was blind to context clues and overly sensitive to potential criticism due to the fact that I still can't believe that someone hasn't found at least something wrong with that letter I sent to the Deseret News!

People here would be much more tolerant of errors in your response than any initial errors in the article being replied to... I'm just amazed that your response was so comprehensive.
