I don't think they will torpedoe it, despite those comments. They are looking for something that will benefit the district.

I think if Sandy and RSL make their case, it will be fine.

Or, it could be that I am an incurable optimist.

It's politics, something at which the FO is unskilled?

"I'd be very hesitant to spend our money on anything not directly benefiting our students in schools all day long." - Lynette Phillips, board member
"I'd hate to see us put our kids at a disadvantage because of a soccer stadium." - Ellen Wallace, board member

If that doesn't sound like a group that wants to torpedo the stadium, I don't know what does. Unless they're just posturing, I guess.

The board members' position reminds me of a quote from King of the Hill, the one where Peggy runs for the school board: "It's for the freakin' children!"

And honestly, I don't care if the JSD brass makes 7 figure salaries or if they get paid in vodka like teachers in Russia. I just want my damn stadium already!

It doesn't sound any different to me than Uncle Dave saying that he would put the team up for sale if he didn't have a deal by August 12. In fact, it is exactly the same. They want something and will get it by threatening to torpedo the deal. It may be as simple as allowing HS pointyball games to be played there. It may be they want RSL to provide financing for the HS soccer teams in the district. It may be they want a luxury box reserved for the Jordan School District Board of Directors, suitably disguised as something else, of course.

Quick thoughts...

A few of the concessions made by RSL in the lastest negociations include donating 500 tickets each match to children who get a library card, and having players visit schools.

I'd also imagine they could also make the stadium available for the occasoinal (American rules) football game. (Maybe let Jordan, Alta, Hillcrest, and a few others use it once apiece each year.) I also think it would really be a very nice place to have some of the playoff games there. The championship games typically get about 10-15K in Rice-Eccles (so it looks sort of like an RSL game). But putting those same fans in a 20K stadium would provide a stadium that looked much fuller and provide a great atmosphere (especially if we still get a roof of some sort.

With all the obstacles already passed, I have confidence that this hurdle will be overcome as well.

I would actually go to the highschool games there (there's no way I drive to RES to watch the championships). It would be sweet to see a nearly full stadium for the High School championships.

Playing american pointy ball growing up, the goal was to get your team to play at Rice Eccles. Everyone wants to play there....

soccer finals always ended up on some random field somewhere...

I could only imagine what an experience it would be to play in a SSS. that would be pretty cool

I've never been to the championships or anything but I'm sure that in a SSS with a roof, they'd be AWESOME! In the basketball playoffs there were people PACKED in the E-Center I'm sure most of them would also go to the football games, they want to be part of their team spirit man! I agree though, JSD probably just wants something out of this, and I don't see why Uncle Dave would object, it's just the occasional high-school game, and the stadium would make money off them. $ + Happy JSD parents/students/and faculty who will come to games = :dancing: Uncle Dave

Only that the Jordan School District, which has to give their okay for the project is feeling like they aren't getting enough piece of the action so they are making some noise.

Besides that, nope, no new news.

Correct, no news, per se. But, the Tribune yesterday ran a story on the letters streaming in to Jordan School District against the proposal. Read more about it at the Are You Loyal blog.
