So why are we celebrating? If they have the votes to get this on the ballot, then this vote by the council was pointless.

Forgive me for being the pessimist today but with a seemingly endless line of hurdles to jump I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell this stadium gets built.

Jerman is just trying to throw his weight around. I think if it comes to it, the Governor and Speaker of the House may have a chat with him.

What would a "chat" do to help our situation? If they have the signatures, they can put it on the ballot no questions asked, right?

Sorry for all the questions today but I'd really like to know what's going on and what our outlook is......what are the odds this stadium deal is really going to happen?

Or some of the contractors, architects, design firms, and the hotel operator and the shopping center operator can have a chat with him.

My choice would be to have Danny Pena, Cle Kooiman, Eduardo Hurtado, John Doyle & Dema Kovalenko have a chat with him.

I guess I feel like being on my soapbox today. I’m getting sick and tired of uneducated arguments against the stadium. I respect someone’s viewpoint if the person has at least kept an open mind, done some research, and came up having a different opinion than my own. What I can’t stand are people that just spout off without first even trying to educate themselves with the facts of the issue.

You know I can just imagine this fictitious comment on the KSL board getting positive results:

Boo to the cowncil
From Naim Withheld

I am mad that the cowncil didn’t listen too the peeple. My taxes are to high already and I bet my property taxes go weigh up now. I don’t like soccer and nobody I know likes soccer either. It is a stupid sport where no one ever scores. Baseball, basketball, and football where there is lots of scoring are much better sports. The last time I went two a Utah Jazz game, both teams scored over 100 points. That is a very exciting score.

I think the soccer team should build there whole stadium themselfs like Larry Miller did. He payed for the hole Delta Center with his own money and didnt make me pay taxes for his arena. I also like hockey and baseball and was glad I didn’t have to pay more taxes for there buildings when they were builded.

I think the soccer teem should just play there games at Rice Eccles Stadium. They already have a place to play. The Utah football team can share there stadium with the soccer teem so they just both play there and save a lot of money.

Now I here they arent going to build any more TRAX lines because they our spending the money on the soccer stadium. Lot’s of peeple ride TRAX and that is more important than the soccer stadium. I hate traffic jams and like to ride the TRAX. I don’t want to drive to the airport because they spent the money they would have used on TRAX to the airport on the stupid stadium.

Speaking of the trib...I spoke directly with Derek Jensen after the vote was taken. He wanted some comments, and I was hesitant to speak with him. What I told him was I was thrilled that the stadium was going to be built and that it's a shame that the county residents haven't been better informed on the issues involved. I tried placing responsibility for that with the RSL FO and the media. I tried to be pretty cordial with him, and he seemed like a nice guy... And so I asked if he was a soccer fan. He told me that he played varsity soccer in high school and plays on an indoor team now. He took issue with Checkett's comments some time ago accusing the trib of an anti-soccer bias - he said that a lot of guys from the trib are pulling for soccer.

I just don't believe him, unfortunately. The trib continues to try and sway public opinion with misinformation and misrepresentation of the facts.

I know that he reads here.

Far from pointless. But, as all things in politics, it is never over until it is over. It is just like soccer (Liverpool v Milan?) until we see the stadium literally under construction, it ain't over. Heck, it may even be over after construction starts, though I doubt it. I seem to recall that Rocky said there was at least one method of getting the funding that bypasses the current process. The current process is being pursued, probably, to assuage egos and create future friends for Soccer.

My take:

This taxpayer revolt against that darned foreign game (we aren't talking good old American Basketball) is endemic to the conservatives that dominate this state's politics. The moderates (there are no liberals in power here, even Rocky would be considered moderate back east or on the West Coast) are not so much against soccer as they are in favor of other more favored uses of the money. Wilson was convinced based on the delay in bond issuance and that there would be opportunities to fund other more favored uses.

It also looks to me that the compromise turned on the building of a parking structure to be shared with the South Town Center. Since that structure is arguably needed (I've been to a big event there, it is needed badly) anyway, then it is not really money *for soccer*. So, it gets some reasonable help for RSL without it being necessary for RSL.

This will not be over until we see the thing built. That is the nature of politics.

Get used to the ride, it won't end for a while.
